SPN FIC - Buckets of Crazy

Mar 19, 2012 10:53

There's a reference to a particular movie in 7.16 that made no sense to me at first -- all I could think was, "Seriously?  Why would Dean ever see that movie?"  Then I gave it some thought, and came up with this.

CHARACTERS:  Dean and Lisa
GENRE:  Gen
RATING:  PG
SPOILERS:  Reference to a scene in 7.16
LENGTH:  300 words

BUCKETS OF CRAZY
By Carol Davis

Clearly, she expected him to protest.  Back out.  Drive her to the multiplex and then insist that they see something else instead.  Sherlock Holmes, maybe.  Or 44 Inch Chest.

But what the hell.  It's a couple of hours away from the house, and there's no socializing involved.  No chatting and smiling, pretending to be something he's not.  All he has to do is sit in the dark and eat popcorn, hold Lisa's hand, maybe catch a snooze.  Eight bucks makes it kind of an expensive nap, but the points he'll score by occupying the seat next to Lisa's for two hours evens things out.

He didn't expect to be interested in the damn thing.

He's silent the whole way home.  Thinking.  Frowning.

When he opens the door on Lisa's side of the car so she can slide out (he's a gentleman; his mother taught him to be a gentleman), she returns his frown and asks quietly, "Are you all right?"

"I'm good," he says, but she doesn't buy it.

"Dean," she says.

The whole street's quiet.  Everyone's tucked in for the night.  He looks from one house to the next, simply to avoid meeting Lisa's gaze.  Then he turns his attention back to her and says, "Hell of a thing to do to yourself.  Go through that."

"Ballet?"

"Hmm."

"People have their reasons," she replies.  "I suppose it makes sense to them."

Buckets of crazy, he thinks.  Giant frigging buckets of crazy.

He tries not to notice that Lisa's looking at him a little too intently.

Two years later, talking to his brother on a snow-covered dock, he will reduce Black Swan to hot tutu-on-tutu action, but he will barely remember that part of it.

What he'll remember quite well is that buckets of crazy seemed like something he understood.
