SPN FIC - Companionship

A look back at the Stanford years -- Sam's been gone for a couple of months, Dad's gone off God knows where, and Dean is handling a simple salt-and-burn by himself.  Which is just fine, until he gets thrown down a flight of stairs, and has to huddle in the Impala, nursing bruised ribs and a mostly-dislocated shoulder.  All alone -- until he's not ( Read more... )

*sniffle*

I do love the idea of Sam asking Dean to go with him to California, but Dean saying no because he knew John needed him. I've never really considered the idea of John not liking to be alone any more than Dean does, but it does kind of explain a lot - like why he would drag his boys all over the country with him, rather than dump them on someone like Pastor Jim or Bobby a little more permanently.

I've seen a lot of stories about Sam wanting to keep various animals (usually dogs) despite their itinerant lifestyle, but it's lovely to read a story about Dean in this position. And with a cat too. (I'm now thinking the cat is really just Castiel keeping an eye on his future friend!)

When I started working on the story - I got to thinking about what we've seen of Young John. He seems very personable, upbeat, friendly, eager to marry Mary and have a family. Doesn't seem like the type of person who'd want to be alone, or who would work well that way. I think the "loner" John we're told about later on was that way by need, not by choice.

Glad you enjoyed the fic!

This is heartbreaking and beautiful, and it says so much about Dean, how he tried to be a good son, how much he denied himself, and how much Sam was there even when he wasn't. I love how you showed Dean as someone who will take care of pretty much anything, even a stray cat that gives him allergies.

Thank you! Yes, I agree, Dean can't resist being a caregiver, whether it's for John, Sam, strangers in need... or a poor, ratty cat.

Thanks so very much for writing and sharing. I've read so few stories about this time in Dean's life yet I find it very interesting and would love more stories from it.
Wonderfully done.

You're welcome! :)

I've done a number of stories about the Stanford years - have you read all of those? They're listed in the pre-series master list:
