Hello, fellow friends and fiddlers. Do not attempt to adjust your computer screen. You read correctly, I have no fiddle! Hopefuly I'll get one by Saturday! My very own. You see, my school was able to sign one out for me, but when I left there I had to give it back. I asked my teacher if I could buy it of him, but he said he wished he could, because

I have a violin that does need some repair work done - one person says the peg holes need to be rebushed - other people say it can be done less expensively. In any case, it's a fairly inexpensive violin (was ~$450 new),and one I'm not going to be using as I have no received and use regularly, my grandfather's violin, and am considering selling....and would be willing to discuss it with you.

That being said - for some things, a $50 violin will work quite well. But as someone who is supportive of both classical and fiddle playing, I'll highly recommend a beginner to go to their local music store, and rent an ok beginner model and buy up if still interested, or if pursuing violin seriously, consider upgrading to a better violin.
That being said - until I inherited my grandfather's violin, I quite happily played in a community orchestra and out at rennaissance festivals, etc., on an "ok student model". There's nothing wrong with them, in general for the average non-professional or serious student. But I have also noticed that the quality of the violin does count when you're learning - and sometimes plateaus aren't always in player ability, but in instrument limitations.

As far as braces, I've definitely been there. When I first got mine on I had this wire thing going across the roof of my mouth and couldn't swallow without serious pain as it cut into my tongue, but from later tightening-and-tweaking experience I can say that the best solution I came up with was milkshakes, soup, and patience.
Although some tylenol might help too.
