Strings

Quick question on strings...I'm noticing that my tone gets fuzzy on stopped strings...especially on ones where I'm using the third finger (i.e. G on the D string). It seems to be getting worse and not better. Is it possible this is because I have cheapo strings on it (whatever they came with) and it might get better with better strings? Or is it ( Read more... )

String Teacher, comming through!!!
Look down the length of your strings - do any of them look frayed or are you able to see how they are wound? That would be a good indication to get new strings and could be causing the fuzziness. Also, I recommend my students get new strings at least once a year, twice a year would be better so you're probably due anyways. I would suggest getting Tomastik Dominants (they're like 35 for a set I think and they'll probably improve your sound and last awhile - I've sworn by them for over 10 years!). You can find them at www.sharmusic.com or www.swstrings.com for cheaper sets. IF for some reason that still doesn't work, try checking to make sure you are placing your finger EXACTLY where it should go and make sure your bow placement is exactly between the end of the fingerboard and the bridge - my violin (especially on third finger) won't ring unless everything is just right. Anyways...that's a lot, sorry! I hope this helps you!

love Dominants - though interestingly I don't htink that's what's on my current violin...hrm..need to call Becker and find out what they put on because my violin is absolutely ringing beautifully!

On my first violin, Dominants worked best for classical music (blended well in an orchestra settings, etc), but didn't ring out enough for outdoor fiddle work - for that, D'Addario Helicores worked the best.

On my transition violin (rental until my grandfather's violin was restored to playable condition) Dominants worked perfect for everything.

first question....Becker as in Carl Becker and Son?
second question...MN...as in Minnesota?
I SO live in Roseville!!!!!
My violin's from Claire Givens.
Thanks for the suggestion for D'Addario Helicores, I'm seriously going to try them! I hope these suggestions worked for you and sorry for the randomness of this reply.

Yes, Carl Becker and Son, yes MN...*laugh* I used to live in Energy Park, now I live down on the very southern end of Burnsville!

Ooooh! Maybe you can help me - do you know Dawn Englemeyer - I was trying to recommend her to someone (another adult) who wants to learn violin, but I couldn't remember the name of the school she runs.

No worries about the randomness...and if you come out to fest (on a Saturday) please stop by the maypole and say hi :)

Don't just assume you suck - not with the progress that you've made so far...you knew that the instrument you got would probably have serious limitations on it *laugh* - go to the music store and see if you can try out one of their violins...you *will* see a difference :)

Otherwise if you think it's worth the time and effort (and money) see about having the violin looked over/overhauled, etc...personally unless you're inlove with it's tone, I probably wouldn't extend the effort on this particular instrument since it sounds like you'll far outgrow it all too soon no matter *what* you do to it.

Yeah I don't want to blow any money on the instrument itself...it's just not worth it! lol I think I might look into new strings...those could be a major problem...I'd imagine a tone getting more fuzzy would be due to either a bow or a string issue than the instrument itself. So as soon as my checking account, etc. is set up here, I think I'll look into new strings and see if that does anything. If it doesn't...well, I'll keep working to the best of my ability and look into a better instrument when I have some money!

actually - the funny thing is that I had buzzing and fuzziness on my old violin, and found that there was a problem with the nut (it was also causing me to snap more than too many strings)....at least strings *can* transfer to a new instrument ;)
