Well, if you play Irish traditional stuff you might look into sessions in the area...a good place to hook up with some local musicians and find out what are some good venues in the area to play...maybe even join up with some others for gigs.

what kind of fiddle music do you play? Are there any Irish sessions in your area? What about old time music groups? At the very least, while you might not be performing for pay in those groups, at least you'll be able to keep your fingers nimble, and meet others - perhaps others that are playing in local venues that could give you some tips.

I'm particular to Irish music - and tend to look for sessions - there are about 5 that I can think of off the top of my head - also if you like that type of music, look for public ceilis - they're always looking for musicians (at least in my area) and will often time let you in for free, and possibly even feed you, ply you with beverages. :)
