help! I bought a practice mute and don't know how to put it on correctly.

Based on some photos and things I found on google, I'm pretty sure I have the thing on right at this point. But it's pretty ineffective as I can tell, and my violin is still pretty damn loud.

Not much you can do in that case. If it's still too loud, then maybe you need a better mute. The problem is that an instrument is going to be as loud as it's going to be. A mute wont really do anything but muffle the high range stuff so the sound does carry through walls and such. If you really want to be able to play an instrument and have it not make any sound, you just need an alternate instrument for that purpose. I have an electric violin that works extremely well for this purpose, and I also use it for its electric capabilities. But that is an expensive route. You could also buy a cheap $15 violin and fill it with cotton or replace the sound post with a rubber stopper.

what kind of mute is it?

little ones dont do that much. i bought a big heavy silver one that works great on mine.

Try a clothespin on either side of the bridge. That'll certainly tone everything down alot! It's a kind of nasal sound but it can be adjusted by moving them into different spots on the bridge. Good Luck!
