I'm in the market for a new pickup. I've had a McIntyre- hate the sticky thingy. And I used to have the kind with the transducer that fits into a gap in the bridge, but the metal flippy bit broke. And now it's lost. I'd consider getting another one of those, but I'd like to hear from anyone else who has a favourite pickup before I just throw out ( Read more... )

Two pickups you could try are:

LR Baggs Violin Pickup

Yamaha VNP1 Violin Pickup

I'm getting the Yamaha one shortly and can't wait to try it out.

Just looked at both of them. I'm tempted to go with the Yamaha out of the two simply because Alison uses one. ;)

My Ashworth has done many years of service without complaint and is better than others I've heard at plugging directly in if you forget your preamp. It's a piezo type that you stick under the bridge and wedge in with paper, the only problem being that it doesn't come with a nice carpenter jack at the other end so you have to bodge your own solution for mounting the jack socket.

I have the David Gage Realist and I freakin' love it.

It has an element that sits under your bridge. The difference was barely noticable, but if you're really picky you can always have the .000002mm or whatever it is shaved off your bridge.

anyway, as far as physical features, the other really cool thing is that the jack is a 1/8" (it comes with a 1/8" to 1/4" cable). Which is awesome b/c the jack is soooo tiny you barely notice it.

The sound is phenomonal - not to mention that sound guys love working with it.

I almost bought the LR Baggs built-in to a bridge one, and after talking to some local dealers who were all about the David Gage realist, I changed my mind. And I'm pretty happy I did.

I can't quite figure out why this pickup isn't getting more attention. Of course this is the only pickup I've ever had.....but I love it.
