fwiw, I use an adjustable Kun shoulder rest, and it makes all the difference in the world. Brings the fiddle up about an inch, so I'm wresting my chin in a very natural and comfortable position.

I've seen Tinsley play his fiddle in the crook of his arm, but I've also seen him play it like a guitar ( or more like a mandolin?) so.... I can't do it. Maybe with a 3/4 or 1/2 size fiddle....

It's fiddle, not classic violin. Find what you're comfortable with, and go with that. :)

a sponge also can work to cut down on the discomfort- the squishy kind, not a hard one. just use an elastic to attach it like you would a shoulder rest.

Kun shoulder rest, for sure. I also have my chin rest so that it sits in the middle! I find the little ridge on them uncomfortable.
