This isn't directly related to fiddling, per se, but rather to transport of a violin. I'm flying across the country for Christmas- to NY to visit my husband's family, and my mother in law wants me to bring my violin. I've always brought my violin in as carryon - or gate checked it if it was a full flight - then you get your gate checked items as soon as you arrive, and it never goes through the baggage handling systenm

Yes! Insist that your fiddle come as carryon. Be willing to cry big crocodile tears at the airport if necessary. Even though my case is a little oversize, I've always been allowed to carry it on the plane, even though they tell me at first it's too big.

Guitars, cellos, etc. are a different story because they really are too big to fit in the overhead compartments. I actually watched out the window once as the baggage handlers threw my guitar onto a pile of luggage and it bounced...

call your airlines, ask if you can carry it on. DO NOT CHECK IT, only carry on.
