Can anyone in here suggest any (primarily) fiddle recordings (be it record, artist, single songs) to listen to? I'm looking to fill in my music collection.
If you like traditional Irish music, Martin Hayes has made some beautiful recordings. You can listen to a low-quality version of his first album, The Lonesome Touch, on the Green Linnet website to see if you like it before buying. I think there's some of Kevin Burke's recordings on there, too, which are worth a listen.
Eileen Ivers, Kevin Burke, Johnny Cunningham, Celtic Fiddle Festival, Doug MacLean's "Fiddle", Martin Hayes- props to altoclef up there. But Eileen is my hero.
If you like Cape Breton fiddle music at all, check out Charlie's Downhome Music. If it's a recording of a Cape Breton fiddler, Charlie's has it.
If you've never heard any Cape Breton fiddle before, I'd recommend The Heart of Cape Breton as a good starting point to get a sense not only of the music but of the dance and the sense of community that surrounds it.
As for fiddlers, Natalie MacMaster and Ashley MacIsaac, obviously, but also check out some less-well-known ones like Wendy MacIasaac, Andrea Beaton, and Richard Wood. Beolach, the Barra MacNeils, and the Rankins are also all good Cape Breton groups, but include other instruments and except Beolach, vocals, if you're getting sick of fiddle.
