country lickin'

hey I'm an advanced classical player who loves improvising and trying out all the styles, but the one i can't seem to get my head around is country.. which is quite a pain seeing as i'm in a country band! all my solos are gypsy or folk, i was wondering if anyone had any sneaky tips on how to make it sound more country? you can talk as technically/ ( Read more... )

thanks for the advice/opinion and i get where you're coming from but im not going to give up at all.. the reason i don't really have the country in me, is basically because ive only just started listening to it really recently, but ill get there, ive got hope! just have to work out why it sounde the way it does then get loose with it! haha

i can improvise i just want to understand the genre more. its not like they're awesome, they like my style and we're buddies. all in good fun

Spend a few hours a day just listening to as many recordings as you can get your hands on. A dozen may be a good start, and repeat them. At some point you ought to be so familiar with the style that the first time you hear a new song, you can predict where the chords will go, then the doublestops will come naturally.

A musical genre is like a language; if you want to learn it and you're impatient, immersion is the only answer. Live and breathe it for a couple months and you'll probably grok it.

thanks, thats a great answer! i actually had just remembered that an old friend of mine, a guitarist studying contemporary music, had done country, and he gave me quite a similar answer. He gave me some instrumental tracks to jam over as well, and its going great! thanks heaps, have a lovely day/night/weekend
