Squeaky Strings

Aug 26, 2006 14:39

argh.

My fiddle strings are squeaking. I'm using Thomastik Dominants and they're not too compatible with my fiddle from the squeaks I'm getting (it's not just me- other players get it on my fiddle). Any recommendations for "squeakless strings"? I don't have a lot of time for experimentation.

TIA

I use d'Addario Helicores for fiddle stuff, and something else that I can't remember the name of for orchestra stuff (though it's *not* Dominants).

A few people have recommended helicores to me. Just thought I'd throw my problem on here and see what would come back. Thanks for the suggestion.

are you sure it's not your bow clashing with the strings, and not the fiddle? that's what my problem is currently, I just don't have enough money yet for a nicer one.

I'm using a Coda bow that I love but I have a few good pernambucos- a total of five bows and they all squeak on these strings. It's mostly the e string- I've gotten wound e's- they help a bit. I've heard that it's an incompatibility between the strings and fiddle. I think I'm going to take mnfiddledragon's advice and try helicore- several people have suggested them to me. My band is going into the studio in two weeks so I need to get something now and get used to them.

thanks for your comment.

Swedish Prim steel-chrome orchestra, if you please; beat any Thomastik, pardon my French

Thomastik makes another kind of strings called "Vision" (with a slightly more expensive version - Vision Titanium). I like these much better than Dominants, and find them more suited to fiddling than classical music.

However the E string squeaks like a Banshee. I recommmend a different E string, such as Tonica.
