I'm posting pretty much solely because I like this passage from Raymond Chandler's The Simple Art Of Murder quite a lot

Part of that quote is very familiar. Maybe it made its way into American Gods (last book I read)?

I don't really remember it from American Gods, but it's been ages since I read that. I get the feeling it's a pretty famous quote; I first ran into an abridged version at the start of When Gravity Fails (by George Alec Effinger), and it led me to look up the whole thing.
