James Goss's Risk Assessment and why I like Ianto and Gwen as just good friends

This is almost spoiler free, but the character interactions are discussed a bit, no real plot details that aren't on the book cover.

Well I won't try to be objective or rational about it -- I am just disgusted by the idea of the Ianto/Gwen pairing. It makes me want to vomit non-stop. Because Ianto can do much, much better than the bloody boring Gwen, and actually he can do much better than the weirdo Jack, too!

Thanks for posting your review. I have read a few Torchwood novels by borrowing them from the library, and I have to say I am far from impressed by the type of language and writing in them. Are these actually adult writers who get paid to write such stuff??

Well that is something I find depressing. I think it's like the endless chick lit you see. All these trashy novels that get published. I think there are so many people out there who can write, understand grammar, and have great ideas. Yet they aren't the same people getting published. I actually really don't understand it at all.

I watched Torchwood out of order. I wasn't a Who fan...I usually don't watch TV (srsly, I prefer black and white movies that you can get at the library). There are exceptions like TOS Trek, and then there was Buffy, and before it ended too, AngelTorchwood was really, sorta like my Rebound Show! So I watched it whenever I caught bits of it on TV, and one of the FIRST shows I've watched was actually was actually "Random Shoes", and I liked Gwen back when I had no idea who everyone was. I also thought there was a threesome vibe between Jack and the two brunettes he kissed in "Stolen Earth", before I found out about Rhys ( ... )

Wow, I do this thing as well of leaving very long comments! thanks for this. To be fair to Ianto, in the very first episode we see his skills. He is never just the clean up guy. We see him hacking into Gwen's home computer and stopping her recording information about them. Also we always know he is the "fixer" guy which means a lot of skill, plus the whole Lisa thing. So I think he is like that from the start and it is just developed as his character does. He was very underwritten in the first season.

I can read other pairings in AU. I do feel a bit over sensitive about Jack and Ianto. It's funny though because I don't mind threesome PWP's with them and an OC, not at all. I don't like them with one of the team, there is something about it that doesn't work for me, I just don't buy it.

I liked Risk Assessment too ... although I also find most of the novels published poorly edited and in need of grammar checking ( ... )

So nice to get a comment from you! Given I have probably left you about 2 million, it's nice to be on the other side. (Not that I'm at all obsessive about your stories ( ... )

Thanks for this. Great review! I really must get around to getting this book, it sounds fab.

I'm with you in not liking Ianto/Gwen as a pairing. In my personal view they can't see each other because the shine of Jack's teeth is just so dazzling. They might get together if Jack was out of the picture, but I think it would still be about Jack, at least for a while. If he really was gone they'd eventually start seeing each other, probably. ("Seeing" meaning "noticing" not "dating". Eh.)

I love your teeth example. I also like that you mean "see" in terms of notice, and I think you have a really good point. I don't think they are compatible or have any chemistry, which clearly matters in this context! They just aren't each others type as it were.

Agreed. Noticeable lack of chemistry. More a brother/sister vibe. Especially in Adam. I/G not my cup of tea at all. I do find the "two satellites, one planet" dynamic really interesting though.
