Amazon are claiming it was a cataloging glitch - which since there is some evidence that the 'glitch' has been in existence since Feb... also that seems to be the standard response from any big company when they do something (online) and it goes wrong. There are various other theories and conspiracies doing the rounds, some more or less believable. They do seem to be trying to fix the issue but it's all a little fuzzy and they aren't exactly being forthcoming. I think the books have their rank back now but the bigger issue was more the underlying problem of how and why it happened (and whether it might happen again) and we don't know what is happening with that.
All in all a bunch of people at Amazon had a really bad Easter Monday and their PR dept have some work to do. I'd almost feel sorry for them if they hadn't done something so monumentally dumb.
