1. What did you do in 2007 that you'd never done before?
Attended my own college graduation.
Slept over at the house of someone of the opposite sex... numerous times.
Moved halfway across the country on my own.
Started paying back student loans.
Went to bars to drink legally.
Made out with gay boys.
Met one of my oldest best friends whom I'd only known on the internet in real life.
Started taking care of my parents financially, rather than having them take care of me financially.
Fit into my skinny jeans.
Bought a couch.
Lost all inspiration to write.
Read more than a hundred full-length novels... just for fun.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year? No, and no.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth? Several people I know gave birth, and you know, this is the first year that I've been able to write that. I've finally gotten to the age that having babies is acceptable and expected.
4. Did anyone close to you die? No deaths to speak of in 2007.
5. What countries did you visit? None but mine own.
6. What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007? If I could answer this question, I would have attempted to achieve it long ago.
7. What date from 2007 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? Christmas, spent in constant transit between hospitals and hotels and my parents' house. My college graduation, also the first day that I realized that I've got many a gray hair. August 25, the day I left Colorado to move to Austin.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? Moving to the one place I've always meant to live and managing it with no pitfalls to speak of.
9. What was your biggest failure? Continuing to work at fucking Mimi's Cafe without seriously bothering to look for another job.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury? Got sick a few times, but I guarantee most of it was directly related to alcohol. =)
11. What was the best thing you bought? My couch. Purrrr.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration? My friends Kim and Rhys, for marrying each other despite everyone else and then proving to them that they were right from the beginning. Joni, for fulfilling her dream of living in Australia and livin' it up down under. Taryn, for marrying the man of her dreams and building the house to go with it. My sister, Hildreth, for affiancing perhaps her best possible counterpart. My other sister, Sarah, for moving on her own and still truckin' regardless of one miniature disaster after another. But I'd have to say that the person who's behavior most merits celebration was my father.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? My own, again and again. My ex-roommate (and ex-best friend), Molly, for concluding a good friendship with the dramatic declaration that she was glad I was gone, and so much more.
14. Where did most of your money go? Rent. Sigh.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? Turning 21. My college graduation. Moving to Austin. The first guy in whom I've been seriously romantically interested in years.
16. What song will always remind you of 2007? Arcade Fire, "Laika." Band of Horses, "The General Specific." Anything by the Decemberists. Guster, "Satellite." The Presets, "I Go Hard, I Go Home." Timbaland, "Bounce." The Shins, "Sea Legs." Tegan and Sara, "Walking With A Ghost." Au Revoir Simone, "Through the Backyards." Broadcast, "Pendulum."
...shit, I should just make a 2007 mix and have done with it.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Happier, I think.
ii. thinner or fatter? Thinner.
iii. richer or poorer? Richer than I've ever been, but I've got the extra bills to go with it.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of? Anything that got me on the track to doing something with my life.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of? Procrastinating.
20. How did you spend Christmas? Although I believe I already said this, I'll reiterate: in constant transit between hospitals and hotels and my parents' house.
21. Did you fall in love in 2007? Negatory, ghost rider.
22. How many one-night stands? Zero.
23. What was your favorite tv program? Mmm... I can't remember if I got into Firefly in 2007 or 2006, but it was one of the best. And Battlestar Galactica. (I sound like such a nerd, but I never even had basic cable the entire length of 2007...)
24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? I wouldn't say I hate anyone, but I can think of at least one person I despise now.
25. What was the best book you read? That's a tough one because I read way too much. Some of Stephen King's stuff: The Green Mile and Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Philip Pullman's The Amber Spyglass. Philip Roth's Portnoy's Complaint. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.
26. What was your greatest musical discovery? Too many good ones to name just one!
27. What did you want and get? A new life. Kind of.
28. What did you want and not get? A new job.
29. What was your favorite film of this year? 3:10 to Yuma, since it was one of the only films to which I looked forward for months that fulfilled my every expectation. A Clockwork Orange, which I'd never seen before. The Departed!
30. What did you do on your birthday? Went to the bar at midnight the night of, and had a rather unsuccessful mini-kegger the next day.
31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? The sensation of progression.
32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2005? I hate shopping, so I'd venture to say that I didn't have one.
33. What kept you sane? Not to be cliche or anything, but books, music, and friends.
34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? This is assuming that I fancy celebrities / public figures on a regular basis...
35. What political issue stirred you the most? Probably some of the addendums in Colorado Springs, like legalizing marijuana and gay marriage.
36. Who did you miss? Taryn, Donna, Joni, that whole old crowd and all of those old familiars.
37. Who was the best new person you met? There have been so many great and unique people that entered my life this year that it's impossible to list just one: Marla, Robby, Timmy, and Tyson, to name a few.
38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2007. It goes on.
39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
here we are inside a novel waiting for an end
but we don't know the authors of the book
maybe someone's writing chapters for us while we sleep
from a million miles away
stuck without a captain or a chart
no one seems to know just who to follow anymore
hang on, hang on
there's a twilight, a nighttime, and a dawn
who knows how long
just hang on, hang on
if we fell inside a forest, would it make a sound?
it doesn't seem there's anyone around
days are long and carry on
we still don't understand
we're a million miles away
stuck without a captain or a chart
no one seems to know just who to follow anymore
hang on, hang on
when all is shattered
when all your hope is gone
who knows how long
there is a twilight, a nighttime, and a dawn
we break
we bend
with hand in hand
when hope is gone
just hang on
hang on
