I need help with my reading list. I go to Bookmans and I kinda flail around like a gimp. I still haven't quite adjusted to not having Dave as my personal shopper when I go the bookstore. It's been a year now, time to learn to deal with this myself (although I am actually going to email him the book list to ask him to add to it if he wants ( Read more... )

Ooo! Ooo! I wanna play! I was going to suggest Catch-22 - which may be my favourite novel - but I see you've read it. Yay!

Poking around at my booksehlf, how about:

Green Grass, Running Water by Thomas King (fiction, humour and sort of Native American mythology)
Geek Love, by Katherine Dunn (dark, dark comedy about a family of circus freaks)
Tiaganna & Song For Arbonne by Guy Gavriel Kay (fantasy-literaure probably some of the best-written out there)
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon (a "murder" mystery told from the perspective of a child with autism)
Shalimar the Clown by Salman Rushdie
Happinesstm by Will Ferguson (fiction, sort of a very sarcastic dystopia novel. It may be listed as Generica)

If you like Foucault's Pendulum, then say yes to Eco's the Island of the Day Before.

I haven't read the Time Traveller's Wife yet, but Jessica and a few other people I know loved it.

If you can only pick one of the above, read Green Grass, Running Water!

Catch-22 has been read, as has Geek Love (and I talked to you about Geek love, so shame on you ;)).

I *always* love your suggestions, so I'm going to throw all of what you said on the list.

Dude, I can hardly remember what day of the week it is, let alone every conversation I've had with you about authors :P

King, Kay and Ferguson are all Canadian writers so let me know if you have trouble finding any of them and I'll send you a care package from amazon.ca!

Stupid LJ!

that and the book the Illusions: The Rreluctant Messiah by richard Bach changed my life. i'm not sure if its what you're looking for but i think it helps with new outlooks on life.

I've read Illusions. I used to have a *lot* to say about that book, but lately, not so much.

Let me know how the other one goes :)

Terry Goodkind, Sword of Truth series - First book is "Wizard's First Rule"
It is one of my favorite fantasy books for the midevil/magic setting.

I can suggest more in a bit if you want more of this type.

I totally agree the first few books in this series are awesome. Over time they started getting a little... angsty and sadistic for me, like a torture sequence that goes on for like hundreds of pages. I may be exaggerating based on my memories, but after reading it I just felt like I needed a shower, ick. It was powerful writing though, no doubt. Wizard's First Rule is awesome.

I also highly recommend the Piers Anthony Xanth series as well as his Mode books.

Your right, the latter books have no where near the feeling of th first books.

I also immensely enjoyed the Wheel of Time series beginning books.

Depending on how you are about "Classic Sci-Fi" your missing Robert Heinlein and Isaac Asimov....two of my favorite writers of all time.
I can get you a huge list for them. I used to read a guy called Robert Silverberg also that I think you might like. He deals alot in Sci-Fiish type stuff but also qweaves alot of questioning religion into it too.

I will be purchasing the second Flight Anthology (I have the first) and Daisy Kutter by Kazu Kibuishi from Amazon soon, and highly recommend letting me loan them to you when I am done reading them.

You do strange link things :)

I managed to extrapolate, though. They look interesting. If you decide to let yourself do that, let me know :) They look good.

I did standard html in word and then pasted it into the browser, which sometimes brings over "the wrong" quotation marks for some reason. You can't really tell until it's too late, and I can't edit the post, so... sorry =)

Glad you got around it. If you mouse over each and look at the links in the bottom left of the browser, you can easily extrapolate exactly where I meant to send you, which is undoubtedly what you did.
