So far away...

I already mentioned this to cliffie917, but I walked by an ad for a new building going up of green living condos yesterday. I want one. I got incredibly sad when I saw the price tag attached. For having the green benefit they weren't much more expensive than buying any other condo in the NY metro area, but I was still sad because of just how far away I am ( Read more... )

Can I ask what makes a condo a "green" condo? I'm just curious to see if it aligns with what I'm thinking.

Thank you for being proud of me! I appreciate the well wishes and know that if this (buying a home) is something you want to do, then you'll do it, trust me.

I planted this seed in my head back at the end of 2003, so it just goes to show that it's taken this long for me to actually be quasi able to do this - for the salary and the lack of debt and the DC housing market to all align. I never thought it would, but it did. Which means it will for you too. Have faith!

The official answer is... a green living space is recognized by its performance in the 5 key areas of human and environmental health -- sustainable development site (using the basic structure from an existing building rather than knocking down an old one and rebuilding from stratch), water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection (recycled and enviro-friendly building materials) and indoor environmental quality. There's apparently a number of points under each of those 5 as well -- thing like each apartment must be able to get 75% sunlight at any given time, all indoor elements like carpet and paint have to be low-emitting in CFC... things like that. It's a pretty impressive checklist, actually.

That and I would imagine they're pretty big in the whole recycling thing.

Thanks for your vote of support!
