Summary: "Truly great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave, and impossible to forget." so how important am I to you?

The time of the year is finally here again.
Girls would frantically be running around discussing about what kind of gift to get for the guy the like. They would be squealing in groups as they thought of all the situations to confess to the guy they have a crush on.

Guys would just sit in their groups waiting for the day, Valentine’s Day, to get chocolates from a girl. They would compete with their friends on how many of it they would get. For some, the guys would be lucky enough to get from the girl that they secretly admire and that day would make a special day for them.

“Ohayou Yutorin~” Keito patted my head as you took the seat next to me.
“Hmm… Ohayou  Keito-kun” Yuto replied restlessly with his head on the table.
“Looks like Valentine’s Day is an issue again ne?” Keito took out his books. “So how will you be celebrating your birthday this year?”
“I’m not sure… My parents didn’t take any leave this year and Raiya is busy with his exams” Yuto pouted.
“Ah. Then let’s go out together to celebrate then” Keito suggested.
“Only two of us?”
“Yeah! Oh! Since there’s nothing for me on Valentine’s day, we can hang out at my house first”
“Jamming session!” they thought together.
“Sure. Sounds like a good plan” Yuto smiled widely.

Birthdays were never lonely even when his family wasn’t there to celebrate with him.  It was never lonely as long as he knew Keito would be there with him. It somehow became a tradition to spend Valentine’s Day at Keito’s house and countdown till Yuto’s birthday. Yuto was more than happy that Keito would be the first to greet him when it strikes 12.

It never occurs to him though that loving their friendship too much made him possessive of sharing Keito with anyone else.

When Keito first brought someone to their weekly jamming sessions, Yuto thought of it as nothing and shrugged it off.
“Yo. Yaotome Hikaru desu!” he grinned idiotically and held out his hand.
“Nakajima Yuto desu. Yoroshiku” he returned a faint smile and took his hand.

Keito smile happily and they started their jamming session per normal but jealousy took the best of Yuto soon enough. Hikaru started to join in their jamming sessions and sometimes even their outings after school. Yuto was simply jealous that they don’t spend time together like how they used to anymore.

He began to doubt their closeness. He began to have insecurities. Sometimes Keito would go out with Hikaru but he didn’t invite Yuto along. Yuto felt that their friendship was distancing.
“Ne, Keito…” Yuto called the latter softly as he lay on Keito’s bed.

Whenever Yuto felt like he want to talk about something he would often head to Keito’s house for a sleepover. Keito would be there to distract him from being sad and thinking too much about life.
“Hmm?”
“Do you like Hikaru-kun?”
“Eh? Why do you ask that question?” he walked out of the bathroom.
“Both of you have been spending time together more than usual lately”
“That doesn’t mean anything Yuto…”
“Demo… You never spend time with me anymore…”
“C’mon Yutorin” Keito put his hand around Yuto’s shoulders. “You know you are important to me right?”
“Really?”
“Of course!” Keito replied. “I’ll be there for you when you need me”
“Yay!” Yuto hugged Keito tightly. “You’re the bestest bestfriend a friend could ever have”

Keito hugged Yuto back and ruffle his hair before they slide under the blanket and start dozing off to sleep.  It’s been a year since Hikaru joined the jamming sessions. Hikaru even brought some friends over to introduce to them.

“Chinen Yuri desu. This is Yamada Ryosuke. He’s mine,” he smiled widely as he clings onto Yamada.
“Yoroshiku. Please ignore him” Yamada smiled and took Chinen to one side to tell him about his behaviour.
“Hajimashite. Inoo Kei desu. If you need a pianist, you can call me” he bowed.
“Yabu desu! Yabu Kota desu. Tell me if the monkey gives you any problems”
“Mou~ Yabu! Who are you calling a monkey!” Hikaru started to chase Yabu.
“Ryutaro desu. Yoroshiku” he just wave from his seat and continue playing with his DS.
“Takaki Yuya desu! Don’t be bothered about Morimoto-kun” Yuya greeted.

All of us started hanging out a lot. Yuto felt it was alright that they were able to know more people and have new friends.

However, as time passed, Yuto felt that Keito was keeping something from him. He felt the sudden insecurities grew heavier. He tried to shrug it off but whenever Keito would start playing with around Hikaru or suddenly starts teasing Hikaru, he felt that there was something off.

After jamming session that day, Hikaru went off early as he had to meet with Yabu and Inoo. Keito walked home with Yuto. While walking home, the comfortable silence they used to share seem more awkward instead.

“Ne~ Keito, my birthday is coming ne…”
“Uhm! You want to do it like always?”
“Erm… Can we go out on my birthday this year?”
“Go where?”
“I’m not sure. Let’s just go out,” Yuto replied nervously.
“Alright. Tell me once the date is nearing ne?”
“Ah. Alright” Yuto felt a bit disappointed. “Am I that insignificant to you?”

Yuto held a strong belief in his heart that he was important to Keito as how the latter was important to him. However, complications started to appear bit by bit. Yuto found himself contacting Keito lesser each day and even skipped some of their jamming sessions.

It was a day before his birthday yet it feel like it’s nothing. It’s like another normal day. As the clock strike 12, he was not at Keito’s house. He was in his room waiting in front of his phone waiting for that one email. He waited till he couldn’t wait anymore. Nothing came. No wishes came.

Tears started to trail down his cheeks as he continued to pick up his phone to check if it was really working. The phone was fine. There was nothing wrong with it.

“Maybe he already has something planned for me?” Yuto comforted himself and went to sleep.
The next day in school, however, nothing actually happened. Other than the usual greet of “Happy Birthday” from his classmates, he did not even see Keito that day.

To: Keitorin
From: Yutorin

Ne, are you sick today?

From: Keitorin
To: Yutorin

Erm… I’m just busy with some stuff. I’ll see you later after you finish school ne?

Yuto looked at the message and slowly kept his phone. It was like Keito to ditch school for anything. As the bell rang for dismissal, Yuto slowly packed his things away. He felt gloomy the whole day as Keito wasn’t there.

Just as he finished packing and looked out the window, he saw Keito standing by the gate. A smile quickly appeared on his face and he ran down to meet Keito. When he was a few steps closer to Keito, he stopped in his tracks as he saw Keito laughing and seemed embarrassed about something.

He heard another source of laughter beside Keito. As he took a few more steps, he saw it was Hikaru.

“Ah! Yutorin!” Keito acknowledge him.

“Yo” Hikaru greeted him.

Yuto just bowed at both of them as greeting.

“Should we get going?” Keito asked. “I’m famished”

“H-hai” Yuto replied.

Through the journey, Keito and Hikaru was engross in their own conversion leaving Yuto behind. Even when they were eating dinner, Yuto felt odd that he was being left out. Most of the time he would just nod or answer with one word to their questions.

When he reached home, he walked slowly to his room. As he closed his bedroom door, he slide down the door, sitting on the floor and covering his face as tears started pouring out of his eyes.

He cried till he was exhausted. When his email alert rang, he quickly rummaged through his bag. That day, he felt how small his existence was. He was exhausted and felt horrible. He took one last glance at the message, laughing at himself and washed up before heading to bed while crying softly.

To: Yuto nii-chan
From: Raiya <3

Nii-chan~ Omedetou gozaimasu! Gomen ne… I couldn’t be there to celebrate your birthday with you but I know Keito nii-chan will be with you ne. ^^

Hope today had been a wonderful birthday for you like everyday other year. I will give you a big one next time. Promise! Love you always oniichan~

As the clock strike 12, his birthday officially came to an end. With that, not even a single wish was sent or spoken to him from Keito.

“We will always be bestfriends!” Yuto chirped happily while glomping Keito.

“Uhm!” Keito let the other boy snuggle on top of him.

“Of course, if we have someone we like we must tell each other first”

“Definitely. We will always be there for each other no matter what”

It was only one month ago yet it seems as though it was a few years ago. Yuto thought their friendship was something strong that everyone envied yet it was actually fragile. Were they even considered bestfriends in the first place? Was Yuto even important in Keito’s love in the first place?

-- おわり--A/N: it's a belated Valentine's Day and Birthday for myself post. Hahaha. I was craving for HikaTo so yeah... Abrupt ending. Stupid ending. I didn't want it to end with a sad Yuto but I'm sorry~ ):
