My original intent for today's Ashley entry was to post a picspam or something else graphic-related, but I failed at collecting/taking screencaps in a timely fashion, so that'll have to wait for later in the week. Instead I'll be posting some art recs.
This is an official piece of concept art. I've posted it on my journal before, but I had to pull it out again for the lovefest because it's awesome. Not only is it gorgeous artistically speaking, but it also encapsulates several of the things that I love about Ashley and that BioWare did so well when they created her. She looks like a competent, badass soldier who knows just what to do with that big gun she's holding. And possibly best of all, she's not oversexualized. She's wearing actual armor instead of some skimpy jumpsuit, her boobs aren't heaving all over the place, and her body isn't contorted into some ridiculous and humanly impossible position. It's refreshing, for sure.
And now for some fanart:

deviantART Ash is a soldier first and foremost, but that's not all she is. I really like this rendition of her with her hair down, so to speak. The lighting and coloring are especially striking.

deviantART There's been a fair amount of angry howling (plenty of it from yours truly) about the few released images so far of Ashley in ME 3, where BioWare's taken her out of her armor and put her in a Miranda-like catsuit instead, complete with heavy makeup and her hair flying loose around her face instead of pulled back--in other words, trying to make her look more "feminine" and appealing to the male gaze rather than practical and no-nonsense like she was in ME 1. I really like this piece of fanart because I feel like it essentially "reclaims" her ME 3 appearance--the outfit is similar, but it looks more like armor than spandex, and her hair is pulled back. She looks lovely, but in a more true-to-character way. I also love the textured effect.
