CHARACTER INFORMATION-
Canon Character and Series: Naoto Shirogane, Persona 4
In-Game Name: Naoto Shirogane
Age: Fifteen
Gender: Female
Position & Ship: Boatswain, the Fiertia.

Appearance: Probably the most noticeable thing about Naoto is that she looks like a boy, albeit a very short one. With short hair, androgynous features, a low pitched speaking voice, and a very masculine wardrobe, Naoto has been mistaken almost universally for a male, even some of the people she works with still have no idea she's actually a girl, as Naoto makes no effort to correct people when they mistake her gender. The second noticable thing about Naoto's appearance is that she's very short, shorter than even other girls her age. As a result, she wears platform shoes to boost her height. The iconic navy policeman's hat she wears also makes her appear taller than she is. She also owns a pair of light blue glasses, which she wears on occasion, but doesn't actually need to be able to see.

Naoto's clothing tends to favor dark colors, specifically navy, along with other colors that compliment that specific shade of blue well.
Personality: Because of her line of work, Naoto has taught herself to be very calm and reserved, rarely letting her emotions get the best of her. She looks at most things from logical perspective and is an expert at using deductive reasoning to solve problems, she even goes as far to try to determine the behaviors and characteristics of people she knows just by making observations and forming scenarios in her head. (Most of the time, she's right) As a result, she appears anti-social and cold to people, often more interested in her work than forming relationships. In reality, she is actually extremely shy. To anyone that's not a friend, Naoto always keeps conversation strictly to business, asking questions, answering them, and going on her way, as social situations make her nervous. With friends, Naoto still remains nervous and cautious, but will allow herself to smile and relax a bit. If she's made uncomfortable in any way, such as being teased, she will quickly change the subject, stuttering and speaking very quickly to try to get over her embarrassment and divert attention from herself. As an interesting note, this often results in her voice taking a higher, more feminine tone.

Naoto dislikes feeling vulnerable, so publicly, she tries to hide all her "bad" sides. She has a childish need to feel accepted by her peers, but because she feels like it's almost impossible to get. It's hard to get it from the police force because she's young and female, and it's hard to get it from others her age because she's a detective. She keeps people at arm's length, causing an odd cycle. Naoto doesn't want to show her weaknesses and be accepted, but since she has a natural instinct to push people away, they are unable to get to know her and can't give her that acceptance that she so desperately craves. Naoto is vaguely aware of this predicament she has put herself into, but she continues hoping that she will be accepted on her achievements alone. Naoto tries to act grown up, but in truth, she's still young, both physically and mentally. Since opening her eyes to her flaws, Naoto has made an effort to try to enjoy her youth. There's plenty of time to grow up, after all.
Abilities/Weapons: As a licensed detective, Naoto is allowed to legally carry a gun and is a very good shot.

Like a select few other people in Reial, she wields the power of Persona - a second side of a person, the "mask" they don to fight enemies. Unlike most Personas, Naoto's, called Sukuna-Hikona, is extremely tiny, small enough to hold in one's hand. However, it's just as strong as any other Persona, slashing at enemies with a gigantic energy blade, or calling upon light, dark, and non-elemental magic to blast through foes. Because of Sukuna-Hikona's rare affinity to both light and dark, Naoto has a strong innate resistance to spells of those types. It's very notable that unlike most Persona users, Naoto does not have a weakness to any type of attack. Naoto's strongest ability, however, is her intelligence. Her ability to outwardly and calmly analyze a situation from several different angles has been a big help in solving cases and other problems. Naoto is also good with her hands, electronics and machinery in particular - she is able to create interesting and unique items and can, in a pinch, work as a mechanic.

Naoto can also kick deceptively hard for someone of her size. It's been known to knock people much larger than her over.

Like her friend, Souji Seta, Naoto owns a pair of glasses that allow her to see through conditions that would normally make it difficult to see such as rain, sleet, and fog. They were a gift from a friend.
How well can your character hack?: Naoto, as part of her self-imposed drive to be a detective, learned how to hack even the most difficult to hack entries on the network. However, she will refrain from doing so unless she feels there is a good reason to.
Weaknesses: Naoto's biggest weakness is her insecurity. Despite the confident personality she puts up while working, Naoto suffers from many psychological issues relating to her work, her age, and her gender. Even though Naoto is called the "Detective Prince," those who are actually in law enforcement don't share the same respect and fascination for her than the media does. Whenever Naoto is assigned to work on a case, those she ends up working with often start to resent her due to her age. They don't want to "get shown up by a kid." The allegations of being a child are not completely unfounded - if Naoto becomes frustrated, the stress eventually causes her to crack, throwing childish tantrums and possibly even crying a bit. However, these fits always occur in private, or in the presence of people she feels comfortable with. Naoto is especially ashamed of this behavior - she knows it won't solve anything and it makes her look bad, but sometimes she just can't help it. Because of this, despite her brilliance, Naoto is often shoved aside and ignored. Law enforcement is also a very male dominated profession, and all of these factors combined make Naoto feel as if she most be constantly proving herself, even if the vast majority of her coworkers have yet to realize what her true gender is. As a result of all this social stress, Naoto will often become obsessed with the cases she works on and will conduct her own investigations and put herself at extreme risk.

Battle wise, Naoto has no glaring weaknesses. However, when compared to other Persona users, she is unable to summon hers as much due to the fact that, despite its size, Sukuna-Hikona puts a larger physical and mental strain on Naoto than most other Personas due to its unique attributes. What this means is that Naoto cannot summon her Persona as much as others can summon theirs, but the trade off is worth it for the power that Sukuna-Hikona has to offer. Still, she can still function without it, just not at full capacity. As mentioned before, Naoto is unusually short and can be physically overpowered somewhat easily. Provided that the attacker stays out of kicking range, of course.

Although Naoto has come to terms with the fact that she's female, and that the path in life she's chosen is a difficult one, she sometimes just wishes she was a different person, because she often feels that people would like and accept her more if she was male.

History: The Shiroganes are a family of renowned detectives, going back generations. Naoto is of the fifth generation of Shiroganes, and has fully embraced her legacy, eager to prove herself as a worthy detective. Naoto's parents were first class detectives, living in a small town outside of Tulgim. However, both of them died in an airship accident when she was very young. Naoto was sent to live with her grandfather on his estate in the Vohemaro city of Berum. Her grandfather, like the rest of the Shirogane family, was a famous detective who had retired many years ago, but decided to return to work until Naoto was ready to continue the family tradition. As a child, Naoto was a tomboy. While other girls were playing with dolls, she was playing with toy airships. As she got older, she raided her grandfather's library of detective novels, reading every single one of them thoroughly, often able to figure out the mystery before the author revealed the answers. She listened to mystery and science fiction radio dramas, and even made her own detective "gear," ranging from her own toy badge to a radio that was shaped like a knife. Naoto would sometimes help her grandfather on cases, making him very proud. She couldn't wait until she was old enough to start officially working as a detective.

When the time came, Naoto passed the certification exams with ease, and was now a full fledged detective, one of the youngest in history. She was a top notch detective who would get assigned to difficult cases, taking her to various towns and cities. Somewhat to her amusement, everyone she met assumed she was male, though she never bothered to correct them, thinking her gender was irrelevant. The media eventually caught wind of her and dubbed her the "Detective Prince," amazed at the intellect and skill of the young boy who was making waves in the law enforcement scene. However, the real world of law enforcement was nothing like she had imagined as a child. Many of the officers didn't take their jobs seriously, or were extremely incompetent. The police seemed to be more interested in keeping up a good image rather than solving crimes. It disgusted Naoto.

Even worse, she was not always welcomed wherever she went. The police are a prideful bunch, and it wounded their pride severely that supposedly, a small teenage boy could do their jobs better than them. Despite her impressive case solving record, many officers refused to take her seriously, dismissing her because of her age. However, this didn't bother Naoto too much. That problem would fade with time as she got older. What did bother her, however, was that law enforcement was a male dominated society. Naoto knew that if it was discovered she was female, she would be given even less respect than she had - there was no way the local authorities would stand to be shown up by not just some young upstart, but a female young upstart at that. Maybe it was better if everyone thought she was a boy.

Some time later, she was assigned to a peculiar case - a serial murder where there was virtually no information. There was no suspect, no clues, and the cause of the victims' deaths couldn't even be determined. The police were stumped. By a twist of fate, the murders were taking place in her hometown, but this didn't affect her work in any way. There, a peculiar group of students around her age caught her eye - not because she thought they were behind the killings, but they were certainly involved in some way. She enrolled at the local high school to get close to them and possibly find out what it was they were up to, but when they accidentally let slip that they were investigating and had this power called "Persona" to help them, she thought they were making fun of her and was hurt, because she felt like they were people who liked and accepted her, and now they were spouting obvious lies at her.

After noticing some patterns in the killer's methods, Naoto quickly put herself up as bait, in hopes of learning more, or possibly apprehending the killer herself. However, when she was kidnapped, a combination of fear and being drugged caused her to panic and she didn't remember the full details of what happened, though she was still able to provide some valuable information. Had the students she met earlier not come to rescue her, she would have been another victim of the killings. Upon her rescue, Naoto was forced to face her flaws, rather than run from them. In doing so, she finally gained real friends who liked and accepted her, and she awakened to the power of Persona.

When word got out that the murders were starting to happen outside of the sleepy town, Naoto became concerned. The situation was getting far out of hand. When she heard that the group leader, Souji Seta, was going to join the Fiertia, she decided to follow, concerned for his safety. Not only that, being on a mercenary ship had its advantages, one of them being the ability to investigate the case more freely. Naoto enlisted onto the ship, though she left out the small detail that she was a detective. The less people that knew that fact, the better.
