Next time, I totally want to come with you. Food Not Bombs is fabulous.
One of the key ideas of Food Not Bombs, I believe, is that everyone needs food. Rich people, poor people, people who you don't know the whole story for (maybe James has been recycling soda bottles every day for eight years to be able to buy that discman, and he's lucky enough to have a friend in Richmond who lets him wash his clothes there...or maybe he's from a family with money who just kicked him out of the house because he's gay...), people you know really well, people you've never met...even YOU. Everyone needs food. And everyone needs someone to talk to

Hey, Jess. Mom here. When Buck made that comment, we were not handing out money. We were handing out boxes of food to people who had stood in line under a blazing hot sun for 2 hours before the line even opened

god damn. you know, you make some really good points. I don't really have anything to add other than I think you're right, I mean, I see the the attitude of not having enough "courage" or whatever to talk to those whom are recieving our aid. It's so easy to distance ourselves, it takes a certain perspective to realize that people really are not all that different. sometimes I am horrified at news stories I read and I have "trouble" distancing myself. one thing that never ceases to frustrate me is how people can not understand other's pain. I guess you are doing what you can to understand, though, and that's awesome. I might have to check this out at some point.
okay i'm not quite sure how to express this in a way that makes sense and isn't weird
but i just want to say, i'm always impressed by the way you can talk about things without pushing "related" agendas and -isms. it's a lot less alienating... it makes me want to listen to you and really consider what you're saying.

Grace was thinking of coming to Earlham soon. Can you come too? I would really love to see you again.
