The thing paper jopurnals have over LJ is that you can take them with you anywhere and write when the mood strikes. The privacy thing is easier too.

pssst... when you're posting, there are options on your lj, including making entries "friends only" (as in only people on your friends list will be able to see it) and there's also a "private" setting, which only you will be able to see when you're logged in. so, assuming you lost your pad of paper at some point, you can always do that. if you're looking for a good journal, borders has hardback books with nothing on the pages inside, and they make good journals/art books for doodling and writing in. i have... ten. or so. yeah.

I have a paper journal too. But make sure when you write in it, they are deep thoughts...it will make for a lot more satisfying reading later. Trust me, I look at my high school journal and its all about stupid boy mush and "why me" trash. Lizzie McGuire meets My So Called Life. I have a journal now that frikkin ROCKS!! (but you'll never know) So instead of a live journal, make it a LIFE journal. You'll be happier.
