Fred had been trying to figure out what to do, wondering if she could try pulling some branches off the trees to create a raft so she could get across the water. Would a raft hold up to whatever was out there, though? She doubted it. That thing had sounded big and mean and rather hungry, and she had no idea whether it ate humans, but she wasn't very keen to find out.
Maybe that was the part of the trial? To face that creature? She looked out at the water, considering whether to chance it, wishing that she knew what she was supposed to do. She would do anything for Angel, no matter what it took, even if was that.
Suddenly, though, she heard footsteps in the stillness and looked over to see Angel running toward her. She let out a cry of relief at the sight of the man she loved and threw her arms around him, holding him tightly, glad he was there. But why was he there - had she already failed the trial? Had it even begun? Was this part of it?
She let him take her over to the boat and looked down at it, knowing that both of them wouldn't fit in there together, even if she sat on his lap. It was too small, and it would sink under their combined weight, she could tell. She looked over at Angel when he said he swim alongside the boat, though, shaking her head vigorously.
"There's something out there!" she told him. "When I put my hand in the water, it churned, and there was this loud roar. I think there's a demon or something under the water. If you swim in there, it might come after you!"
