FEB 2001 - JOHN TITOR: The West will become very unstable which gives China the confidence to "expand." I'm assuming you are all aware that China has millions of male soldiers right now that they know will never be able to find wives. I guess you could say that Taiwan, Japan, and Korea were all "forcefully annexed" before N Day.

I figure if the American administration is actually worried about the PRC, which they aren't, they'll push for Japan to revoke Article IX of their Constitution: the section which forbids them from maintaining offensive military-capabilities.

There was a BBC news article a few months back that discussed recent mobile, missle-launch platforms that the PRC had. It's speculated that ballistics from them could reach the Pacific Northwest and that it would be easy to arm the missles with nuclear warheads.

"Japan to Look at Revising Pacifist Constitution

Japan's Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has said his party would unveil ideas later this year on amending the US-imposed constitution amid calls to end the country's official pacifism.

"Since the Liberal Democratic Party marks the 50th anniversary of its establishment this year, we want to make strenuous efforts to issue a draft or concrete ideas on revising the constitution by fall," Koizumi said.

But he said he did not expect any revisions to take place in 2005 or next year as the ruling party needed time to hammer out differences with other parties.

Koizumi has championed a more prominent international role for Japan, sending troops to Iraq in Japan's first deployment since 1945 to a country where combat operations are ongoing.

Press reports have said the ruling party wanted to overhaul the constitution to allow the military to use force in international missions."

holy moly!

I wasn't aware that Japanese politicians were actively working to have it removed! Huh. The military budget for Japan is something like only 1% of the GDP since America has promised to cover the nation. That leaves billions to spend elsewhere unlike the ever declining federal reserves from the Iraq occupation. *grumble, grumble*

Wow, you know who Zhao Ziyang is? Pardon my surprise, but most people over here don't even know who he is. Or was, I guess...

You do realize that John Titor could have based this observation on any of China's numerous statements against Taiwanese independance since 1949. I mean, cmon, this isn't new.

Anyway, from the perspective of an old, experienced China hand like myself: Taiwan is China's, always was before the Treaty of Shimonoseki, and always will be after they reunite with China. What nobody in Taiwan realizes (or wants to admit, perhaps) is that China has been embarking on these radical (and totally UN-Communist) market reforms for 20 years and by having Taiwan come back they just want to use Taiwan's advanced economy to help their's grow. Just look at Macao or Hong Kong...those are two cities held in the grip of a brutal communist dictatorship if I ever saw any!

Please.
