[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]

Name: Guybrush Ulysses Marley-Threepwood
(Note: He’s gone by a number of aliases over the years. Often, when asked to give a name, the player will have the option of picking his real name, or a choosing from selection of aliases. These aliases are usually just jokes, and have no impact on the story)
Age: 27-28.
Gender: Male.
Fandom: Monkey Island (game)
Timeline: Post-Tales of Monkey Island
History: http://www.miwiki.net/Guybrush_Threepwood

Character Personality: Guybrush is a fun-loving, easygoing guy. In the beginning of the first game it’s his dream to become a pirate, and achieving this dream has not disappointed him. There’s nothing he enjoys more than doing piratey things. He loves sword-fighting, treasure hunting, stealing, sailing, and drinking. Of course, more than anything else, he loves his wife, Elaine. He’ll do anything for her. When the Voodoo Lady foresees his death on Blood Island, he travels to the island anyway to find a cure for a curse he accidentally placed on Elaine. And more recently, when he really was killed, it was his love for her that brought him back to life. Elaine seems to be the only person who Guybrush truly trusts. Even though the Voodoo Lady has always proven his ally, LeChuck has hinted that she’s been manipulating him, and Guybrush is becoming a little suspicious of her.

There’s a certain duality when it comes to Guybrush’s intelligence. In his first attempt to defeat LeChuck, he manages to sneak aboard LeChuck’s ship to steal the Voodoo Anti-Root he needs to defeat him, but he botches the actual destruction of LeChuck so badly that he messes up Elaine’s attempt as well. When kidnapped by LeChuck, he was able to put a stop to a landing party LeChuck had sent to attack Plunder Island and he managed to escape from the room in which he was held, however, immediately afterward, he proposed to Elaine with a cursed ring he’d stolen from LeChuck’s hold. Guybrush’s life is loaded with moments of brilliance offset by moments of foolishness. However, he does seem to be consistently witty. He makes clever jokes all the time, and relies on biting insults to distract his opponents in combat. He has a habit of talking to himself, often saying things that don’t make sense even to him. The anachronistic nature of his world can make this even more confusing, as sometimes he’ll reference people or characters who shouldn’t exist for centuries after him then admit he doesn’t know what he’s saying, and other times he’ll encounter objects that shouldn’t exist, such as soda machines.

Guybrush has a curious sense of morality. He is often seen stealing, conning, and framing people, but he appears to draw the line at murder. He has no problem with destroying ghosts and zombies, but he never deliberately kills living humans. He doesn’t seem to be hypocritical about this, either. For example, when Murray betrays him, he doesn’t get indignant about it (at least, not for very long). Instead, he finds away to get Murray to take his side, or at least to get Murray out of the way.

Guybrush is a very proud person, and has no problem with bragging about his abilities and accomplishments. This can occasionally lead to him childishly one-upping an adversary. He has a number of bizarre likes and dislikes. For example, he likes helium balloons and chess knights, but he dislikes Japanese food, and he's terrified of porcelain. He's occasionally displayed appreciation for things most would consider sophisticated, like Shakespeare's plays, but he can't stand people who act pretentious. He's shown a preoccupation with treasure in the past, often risking his life for it, but since his marriage, he seems to have gotten over this, presumably because both he and Elaine are now wealthy.

Guybrush is not a very trusting person. It's very difficult for a person to gain his trust, especially if they have harmed him in the past. For most of the series, Elaine and the Voodoo Lady are the only people he shows any trust for, and by the end of last game he's beginning to wonder whether he can trust the Voodoo Lady. However, mistrust doesn't always mean dislike for Guybrush. He certainly doesn't trust Murray, the demonic talking skull, but he's very friendly with him and always seems happy to see him

Character Abilities: In combat, Guybrush is a great swordsman. He prefers cutlasses, and when he uses a style known as insult sword-fighting. In combat, he throws insults at his opponents to help him get the upper hand, and comes up with comebacks to their insults. He was able to defeat the swordmaster of Melee Island, and in another battle he was able to insult and hold off a pirate while simultaneously offering words of support to Morgan LeFlay. Guybrush is also an impressive shot with both pistol and cannon. He was able to shoot and destroy Edward Van Helgen’s banjo without hurting Edward himself. He’s also very durable, and can take an almost cartoonish level of punishment without permanent damage.

Guybrush also has a number of non-combat skills. He’s able to hold his breath for ten minutes. He’s great at problem-solving, and seems to find solutions for even the most exotic of problems. He also has a knack for decoding encoded maps. He knows a little bit of Voodoo, and can even make a Voodoo Doll with the right ingredients. He’s an impressive banjo player, even if he’s nowhere near the level of Edward Van Helgen. He’s a very good liar, if he has enough time to think of a good lie. He can speak fluent Spanish. Finally, he’s a very good writer. He truly seems to enjoy writing about his experiences, and his handwriting is excellent.

Character Weaknesses: Physically, Guybrush isn’t terribly strong. Despite his talents, there are many pirates he can’t match in pure physical strength. Often, he has to find a way around an obstacle that a stronger pirate could get through with muscle. Guybrush is also very clumsy. He isn’t above dropping an important item, such as a delicate bottle of Voodoo Root Beer.

For reasons unknown, Guybrush is terrified of porcelain. Just looking at it is enough to make him shudder, and he hates to touch it. He can force himself to touch it, if absolutely necessary, but he tries to avoid it whenever he can. He’s a little lazy, and can’t stand to do any non-pirate work. He hates reading, even though he loves writing, and he prefers to avoid libraries. He doesn’t really think of the consequences of his actions, and has an unfortunate habit of making a lot of enemies through his pirate ways.

[ MEISTER ONLY SECTION ]

Why your character should be a Meister: Guybrush often comes up with clever uses for items, so he would be able to use even a strange Weapon if he were a Meister. His insult sword-fighting techniques are more applicable as a Meister than they would be as a Weapon. In short, using the guitar-and-amp metaphor, Guybrush is better fit to provide the pitch as a guitar would, rather than providing the power as an amp would.

Meister Ability: Foul Soul,
