I've been doing research on mattresses. Whenever I'm buying something major (and even when buying something minor), I do research. Lots of research. Here's what I've learned:( More than you've ever wanted to know about mattresses... )
I love futons. I was about to buy a foam-filled one from that store on Waverly Place when I found my Beddinge Lovas convertible sofabed @ IKEA last year, then went to replace the bent steel frame this January. I'm still quite at ease in here with my invisible girlfriend, having hot, imaginary sex insstead of Medidating as I should be doing on Monday evenings, and asking what the hell use is a box spring for? I think they are traps for suckers with change in their sacks. Step right this way, Madame...
Everybody's body is different. dimakoi also swears by futons. justeps swore by his Tempurpedic memory foam mattress.
I've tried sleeping on memory foam, futons, waterbeds, spring mattresses, and hybrid mattresses. I've found futons to be incredibly uncomfortable. My mother had tried some memory foam on me, and I wound up supplementing it with sofa cushions to make it palatable. My ex had a thing for waterbeds; they made me seasick. I've slept on spring mattresses and hybrid mattresses in hotels. I know what my back prefers.
The last time I bought a new mattress, I went to a place called "Mattress Factory" which was located nearby (relatively - 11 miles). I bought a middle of the line mattress which I've now had for, I'm guessing, either 9 or 11 years. I still rotate and/or flip the danged thing on a monthly basis. Mattress Factory actually manufactures its own mattresses on an as-ordered basis. I got a queen-sized and it cost me about $5-600. I think for my next bed I'll go down to a full-sized one, even though I've been sleeping on queen-sized mattresses now for almost 30 years.

As they say, "Your mileage may vary."
