I just finished my mother-in-law's present, and even though I'm not 100% satisfied with it (i suck at shading in anything other than greyscale), I do like it quite a bit, and I wanted to share.
The problem is that I can't get the color right. When I try to shade anything demi-realistically, the colors I mix for the shadows make the person look bruised or corpse-like. :/
I really do like the feel of this painting, though, like one of those washed out renaissance pieces. It suits the oval shape well, I think.
Ahh, the secret to painting shadows on the skin is good old Hookers Green. Or Chromium. Mix it with a little burnt umber, then blend it in with the skin tones. I've only recently learned this. That's why I'm so happy with my portraits lately!
Sweet, thanks for the tip. I'll check that out next time I donate a kidney so I can afford more paint. Oof. I'm still recovering from last time I needed more Quinacridrone Magenta, but oh, how I love it!
I really liked the start of that portrait you posted the other day. Your shading is fantastic, so I value your input a lot. Thanks again! (and i want to see it when it's done!)
