This is no more horrible than any of the things that he suggested in '96. That probably sounds glib as all hell, but I LIVED through Newt's "Republican Revolution" the first time around. If he got arrested for molesting a dead horse, the ONLY way it would surprise me would be if he DIDN'T self-righteously accuse his critics of being the ones with the REAL moral problems.

From an electoral standpoint, I love Newt. I want to see him get the nomination. He's such an insufferable asshole that even the extremist Republicans that he helped put into power in '96 soon found his company so intolerable that he became the only House speaker in U.S. history to get disciplined for ethics violations - by a REPUBLICAN Congress, no less! - shortly before being forced to resign from office simply to spare himself the ignominy of his own party kicking his fat ass out ( ... )

I just... can't understand what kind of world these people live in, how their minds work, if they think that legislation to stop children from working in sweatshops, or to keep employers from firing people based on race, or to stop factories from pumping carcinogens into the air they breathe are bad things. It's utterly alien, and it frightens me.

You want a mentality that'll drive you out of your damn mind? Try being five years old, reading the newspapers and realizing that a) literally everyone agrees that the nuclear arms race between the U.S. and the USSR will inevitably result in the end of everything, and yet, b) literally everyone treats that nuclear arms race itself as something that can't be stopped, only escalated.

Even the most far-right conservatives believed that this would result in the extinction of the human race, and yet, even the most stridently outspoken liberals who were protesting it had this completely fatalistic attitude about it. Even my mom would just start crying when I said to her, "But people can't be dumb enough to keep doing something that they know will kill us all, can they ( ... )

Kirk (if I may be so familiar), please don't mistake my distraught hyperbole for naivety. Sheltered though I may be, I'm an adult, and I've always known that people like Newt and his ilk exist. While I can grasp where your view of humanity comes from, I don't share it.
