The gay support meme

Oct 04, 2006 22:09

I probably shouldn't write this, but here is what I see.

"We want diiversity in our environment.

"It's okay to be [$minority], if you talk like a white man.

"It's okay to be gay, if you talk like a straight man.

"It's okay to be a woman, if you talk like a white man.

"It's okay to be a lesbian if you talk like a straight white man."

I'm no queer theorist, and I don't read gender studies or political sociology or whatever . I can't be the first person to say this, but I know what I see. A lot of well-meaning people have no idea what their expectations are. They're not aware of the internal judgements and prejudices. The internal, and often unspoken, viewpoint is to treat someone like you think you would want to be treated and to expect them to respond how you think you would respond. You (we, I, they) are often wrong on both counts.

Professional demeanor in the business world is defined as behaving like a straight white man, whether you're a woman in heels, a dyke in boots, or a cocksucker; or have brown skin or epicanthic folds.

So, the meme was well-meaning, but annoying.
