yesterday I was driving to rehearsal and I was listening to this great program AfroPop on public radio. they had a big story about Raj? rai? and the career of this Khaled guy. They talked about the music and how some of it influenced young people to revolution, and they'd sing in arabic instead of french. I listened for a long time. The funniest thing is hearing the traditional drums and vocals, but then with these cheesy 80's guitar riffs and synthesized trumpets. some of it was great though.
yey rai :) - adam and I went to go see khaled perfom the summer before last, it was excellent. one of my cousins here totally idolizes him, sings all his songs, knows his whole life story.
it's funny because my "good" cousins are all anti-rai, because the lyrics are dirty and because rai singers are usually boozers and people who have lots of extramarital sex. they're like rap singers.
the synthesizers crack me up. thanks for the article!
