Leslie Fish has extra studio time. What song do *you* want recorded?

Mar 03, 2008 09:21

Hi, everyone --

As you may know, Leslie Fish is spending two weeks at Kristoph Klover & Margaret Davis's studio to record a pagan-oriented CD for Prometheus (primarily her "Chickasaw Mountain" songs). We anticipate having a bit of extra time on Thursday (March 6th) -- just enough for Leslie to record one extra song, on any topic.

However, there's nothing we need recorded -- and we don't have the budget to record extra tracks for fun. So, over the next 72 hours, you're invited to participate in an experiment.

FINAL TOTALS AS OF 10:00 PM (PST), 3/5/2008

"Just Record Any Song, Leslie!":
- $100

Qualified Individual Songs:
- Carmen Miranda's Ghost: $50
- Horse-Tamer's Daughter: $30
- Hope Eyrie: $25
- Pridefall: $25
- We and They: $25

Overall: Thanks to everyone who pledged, but the outcome was still $250 short. If people want, we can try this again in the future with significantly greater notice.

BACKGROUND:

* It costs us about $400-$500 to produce a complete song in the studio, including hiring session musicians and mixing.

* There are lots of songs by Leslie Fish that filkers have wanted a really awesome recording of. Perhaps you've always wanted a clean copy of Leslie singing "Horse-Tamer's Daughter" or "Carmen Miranda's Ghost".

WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN:

* For the next three days, we'll be collecting votes (with pledges) for the song you'd like Leslie to record. The first song to receive $400 worth of pledges will be recorded by Leslie in the studio on Thursday. Leslie retains final veto power over what she'll record - so no requesting "Banned from Argo" please!

* An MP3 of the winning song will be made available to the filk community under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial license within 90 days: in other words, everyone is welcome to share it freely for non-commercial purposes, but we retain the right to include it on a future commercial CD. All pledge contributors will be thanked in the MP3 release announcement -- and space permitting -- in the ID3 tag of the MP3 itself. (Anonymity requests will be also honored.)

* Even though Leslie came out to record a pagan CD, you don't need to pick pagan songs. (We're not doing this to mooch a free album track -- but to get something recorded that the filk community wants, and which wouldn't happen otherwise.)

* Neither I or Leslie or her publishers will be pocketing any pledge money; it will all be used for recording. I will personally pay any shortfall if the studio bill exceeds $400 (e.g. "Horse-Tamer's Daughter")

HOW IT'LL WORK:

You can do one of three things:

1. To nominate your favorite song for recording, post a comment to this entry with your song in the title, and with your pledge amount in the title or post. (Note: It's best to nominate songs written by Leslie, since we know we'll receive songwriter permission for it!) Leslie's songs on out-of-print anthology albums are fair game, too.

2. To pledge for an already-nominated song, reply to that LiveJournal comment with your pledge amount. Note: since we can only record one song, by pledging $20 for three songs, you're still only pledging $20, not $60!

3. To just chip in money for any song, reply to the "I'll Pledge For Any Song" entry. [$2000 in pledges for 100 different songs = no recording. ;-(]

After you pledge, please check back here this weekend to find out whether your song "won". If your song wins, I'll provide a Paypal address here at which you can send your pledges. Please only pledge if you are committed to contributing if your song wins!

(If you are not a LiveJournal user, you may pledge by replying to this post "anonymously" with your name and contact info. Or e-mail me at: eli@prometheus-music.com.)

AND ALSO:

* I'll update the pledge totals every 24 hours in this LJ post. Pledging will close on Wednesday, March 5th (midnight, Pacific Time).

* It may take up to 12 hours for me to reply to any e-mails or questions, as I am living in Holland, with a new research position as of Tuesday.

* If you need ideas, check out the Pegasus Awards page for Leslie Fish, or the Filk Discography.

Any questions?

Yours,

Eli Goldberg
Prometheus Music

P.S. Please pass this along to anyone who may be interested who is not on LiveJournal, and to any appropriate lists!
