For demisting the windscreen turning the A/C on as well as the heater actually works better than the heater on its own, because the A/C dehumidifies the air. It seems to work better at defrosting as well.

On my last car, when the ventilation setting was turned to defog, the A/C turned on automatically (but could then be turned off if I didn't want it). It helped significantly compared to having just heated air.
