Snowmageddon? Snowpocalypse? Snow, You Know Nothing...?

Jan 05, 2014 18:39

As a reminder, I'm in extreme west Ypsilanti, MI, basically just south of the Ann Arbor/Ypsi border. At this writing, I have about 4" of snow on the porch. I just spoke with my sister, NW corner of Ann Arbor, and they've been shoveling all day -- sounds like at least a foot ( Read more... )

Well it's been snowing here all day and tomorrow is supposed to be friggin cold tomorrow -13. My boss called about an hour ago and said if I didn't come into work tomorrow it would be OK due to snow and cold (it would be scheduled PTO not unscheduled PTO - there's a difference). My first thought was that it would be OK, that I could get to work. After all the chaos of the holidays I really wanted to get back to normal. Now after seeing the temperature and the snow out there, maybe I should take the day off and stay here.

As long as the power doesn't go, I'll be OK. I have to clean the oven too. My Christmas dinner spilled grease on the bottom of the oven so next time I tried to use it, the house filled with smoke.

Good luck on the oven cleaning, and thank FSM your boss is reasonable about this.

I'm testing it out with a pizza for lunch. There was a little smoke, but nothing to worry about ( ... )

One thing if you like older games is to check out Good Old Games. They've got some really nice ones there, like Master of Magic, which I never expected to be able to play again.

No snow here, but the seafront looks like we've had an earthquake or something--here's what it looks like after two days of gale force winds and the highest tide in decades. What I particularly love is our bandstand, which we were told a year or so ago was old and so needs to be replaced by something modern and shiny and glass (GLASS!). It is clearly the mightiest of bandstands,as it is one of the only things still standing and relatively undamaged. The bards shall sing of its steadfastness, and poetry composed in its honour.

Fortunately, despite being evacuated on Friday night, my house is fine. And even more fortunately, perhaps miraculously, nobody's actually been hurt by this, despite a few close calls. The damage is expensive, but stuff can be repaired and rebuilt.

goodness! Looking at that you could almost have used the bandstand to shelter if you got caught out in that mess.

You could (though now the police are keeping people from getting too close, after a couple of idiots required rescuing by the lifeboat crew)! Especially as the actual shelter is on top of the spot where the sea wall breached, and has since collapsed. The seafront was evacuated again this morning, apparently with good reason! (I'm enough inland that now we don't think the rivers will be bursting their banks, I don't have to leave. And every time I think about going outside, I look at the wind blowing and change my mind.)

It's a howling blizzard outside. I didn't make any attempt to leave the house today. (I hope the staff at EFRC were able to get there to feed the tigers, but there's no way I could travel 90 miles in this.) I guess I have to hope it's not beyond my neighbor's little plow to dig us out, because I'm sure it's beyond my puny snow shovel.

Stay in, ace. There will be other, closer folks to feed the kitties, and more importantly keep them safe and warm inside. Traveling alone for 90 miles in conditions like this is Simply Not A Good Idea.

I'm far enough south that we're expecting maybe a couple of inches of snow and temps of 17F tomorrow morning--which seems mighty cold to us, but probably don't call for more than leaving the tap on a trickle and making sure everyone who leaves the house has a Real Coat, hat and gloves.

Good. Hope things stay that way.
