Yeah, that seems to be the case. I'm just still hesitating over the mechanics of it. Like, I want to work it out with an English-speaker before I do something dumb...

I'm guessing you haven't tried friending anyone or have gotten friended yourself? That'll probably answer the question whether or not someone just gets an automated message :|a

Yeah. I haven't tried because like... if they decide to poke me to ask why I'm friending them or something I wouldn't be able to explain...
