It really appears that social manners and graces are simply not taught anymore. I'm lucky that Erik is a prtty mild mannered kid, but there are still basic level things that I'm trying to get, gently, through his head. perfect example, he still answers the phone by just saying "Yeah?" or sometimes nothing at all. Also, he doesn't know how to introduce himself or others.
Funny, too, I can't remember exactly when I learned these things, I just knew it was the way you did things, and the proper way to do it. Was it my folks, was it school? No clue, but whatever it was, it's not passing those lessons along anymore.
My mother and I have taught them to say "please" and "thank you" as they were growing up. Now that my mom has been raising them, she lets them talk to her so awfully. She doesn't punish them. At least they still have manners around other adults.

reason # 478 why i have no intention of having or adopting kids. it helps that ihave my neice and nephew - they keep that lack of desire in check. if i ever feel like maybe i want to raise tiny humans, i visit them and am reminded why i don't between the messiness (from both), the bodily fluids (from the toddler), and the nasty bitchy attitude (from the 4 year old). but then i am around one of my best friends' son who is 14 and he's awesome. i think what makes it especially sucky in your case is that one of them is your own kid. god that blows. i'm so sorry.
