I hate to bring up math but it applies. In math many times very complex expressions reduce down to neat and simple expressions. The trick is having the mathematical expertise to manipulate the expression from its complex a simpler one. The same is true in real life. On appearance, many expressions can look most daunting, but if you are smart (able to collect like terms and cancel out others), these can boil down to simple truisms.
