[Several hours after this.]

I thought I had a touch of the indigestion this morning, but it hasn't passed.

I've lost my eye and been shot to pieces, but I have not vomited blood before. It is the typhoid fever. I've seen many a soldier die of such a thing, and I know the symptoms.

I'm sure it's not typhoid, but if you like you can come into the infirmary and I'll take a look at you.

If it's the typhoid fever, I am played out, Doctor.

You can't die permanently here, Mr. Cogburn. The Admiral places measures for it not to happen.

But you should be looked at or I can come to you.

I learned last year not to argue with little girls when they get it in their minds to have their way.

All right, Sis. You'll have to come here. I'm as weak as a kitten, and feverish to boot.

If you are vomiting blood, sir, you should be taken to the infirmary. I can escort you if you are concerned about infecting anyone, as I am immune to contamination. [Have some big words, cowboy.]

Thank you for the offer, Mister, but I'm played out. I will let the fever run on my own Chinese rope bed.

Then I will come and carry you.

Do you know what an ulcer is, Mr. Cogburn?

Mister, it's typhoid.

[Read: Nope.]

[He will guess that "Nope"] If you drink enough and are hard enough on your stomach, you can eat away some of the lining until it bleeds. It hurts pretty damn bad and you can throw up blood. It's not contagious but it's something that needs looking at.

I'm not in pain.

[...Which should tip anyone off to it not being typhoid, but hey. Old-timey scares.]
