They're mostly used for communication and storing information... I don't know what words I can use that you'll understand to explain how they work. But how they work isn't all that important unless you're trying to fix one or hack one.

Why would one hack their computer? They seem very useful! Perhaps if you wished to destroy your enemy's resources, but... would they not be better seized than broken?
