I'm still a year and a half away from finishing my BA in English at McGill, but I'm already dreaming about attending film school. My main choice at the moment is Vancouver Film School, in the Film Production program. I have two concerns, however

Desperate for unemployment, are we? How about moving to L.A., getting a scut job at some prodco and working your head off, and watching every obscure movie you can clap hands on? Because that's what really makes an impression. I will admit that film school is more fun, especially one that lets everyone in who can write a check, like VFS.

Well, that's hardly a fair assumption. :( My interest in film school isn't based on a dream of finding fame and fortune in Hollywood -- I don't even plan on leaving Canada. Nor is my interest in VFS based solely on its admissions process.

Going to LA is the equivalent of begging to the fucking gods that you can't find work. This is coming from a guy who spent most of his time there working in-industry. And really, no school is more likely to get someone a job (though USC and UCLA can get you some *great* internships, as you probably know).

Trying to break into the industry from the ground in Los Angeles is the hardest and probably worst way to be successful, no matter how much you're willing to whore yourself. It's a shame that the myth is the exact opposite.

I'm a graduate of VFS and yes, the tuition hurts but any decent film school is likely to bleed you hard

Oh wow, thanks for taking the time to write that! It's good to hear that you had a good experience there, and that it paid off in the end, despite some of its shortcomings. I like that it starts from the ground up (my experience is minimal so far), yet remains a demanding program by all accounts.

And yeah, I plan on staying in Vancouver after the program, unless I end up disliking the city for whatever reason.
