After replaying Half-Life 2 and Episode One I have to say, Valve pretty much destroys the competition as far as telling a story with their games. I haven't seen that much care placed into a video game in a long time, I had almost forgotten what a great engine, great skinning, and amazing voice acting can do.

Not to mention the eternity of quality testing they do.

Oddly, they talk about it in the commentary for Ep One. It was a ploy to help build empathy for Alyx because she makes corny jokes sheepishly.

I suppose, but they should have realized the acting, expressions, and sweet gun of hers would keep fans happy and concerned for her.

Don't forget about Bungie.

But HL2 is easily on my top 3 list of best fucking games ever.

Yeah Bungie does a nice job with the Halos, but Cortanna is the only character with real facial expressions in that game. Every single dirt bag useless npc is showing emotion in HL2, even when they're saying stupid shit like "Don't forget to reload Dr. Freeman!". Not to mention the "we'll load skins as the fmvs progress" problem Halo 2 had.

I've got to give you that one, HL2 is one of the most detailed games I've played yet, aside from Gears of War.
