Truth was that Blair hadn't been quite sold on the whole "island is a hell hole of suck" until fairly recently. Sure she'd acted like she was taking Free Bird to its most literal of meanings and cut off her hair, but it worked for Audrey so there was no reason it couldn't work for her too. Whether she wanted to admit it or not, the island was ( Read more... )

I came into the rec room looking for a newspaper, but once I see Blair sitting on one of the sofas, I make a quick change of plans. It's not that I know her or anything -- other than a few anecdotes from Serena and seeing her at a few parties, I don't know her at all -- but she more than likely knows Vanessa from home.

And yeah, I might've made a promise to stay away from the bi-- barista, but I see no harm in asking for a less biased opinion than Nate's when the opportunity presents itself. Besides, I'm still not convinced she isn't crazy.

"What do you know about Vanessa Abrams?" I ask with no preamble, arms folded against my chest.

Eyebrow arched, Blair surveyed the girl in front of her. One of Serena's that was without a doubt. From what she'd seen of her the girl seemed to be step up from Nita, the miserable wreck of Serena's last bought of philanthropy. Closing the magazine, she considered exactly how much truth this girl wanted from her. Dare she explain that the girl was like a blackhole of indie hipster waste and that a highlight had been when she pretended to be the dreaded V during a weekend of bodyswapping?

Probably not. She'd give the girl a chance to catch her bearings. "Only enough to know that she likes to insert herself into places and situations that don't concern her. Her hair could use a good defrizzer or relaxer and that she's practically a cliché." Blair paused, tilting her head expectantly. "Or were you looking for straight and dirty facts?"

With an answer like that, it's hard to believe Serena's friends with her -- let alone best friends. Being from the UES, I know her type all too well: the Queen Bee who rules the school with an iron fist. But while I would've avoided her like the plague at home -- or, more likely, kicked her ass during fencing -- this flavor of honesty is exactly what I'm looking for.

"The latter."

Ah well, that's an easy thing to give away. While the UES might be a lifetime away, the habit she had for gaining all the secrets and knowledge she felt like wasn't one that had come up for retirement. The island still had people on it, and as long as it did, she'd keep knowing what there was to know.

"From Brooklyn, best friends with the guy Serena was dating back home, has a thing for coming and going through windows. Let's see, home-schooled or something and always toting around a video camera for when she feels like making art or living vicariously through others. Annoying." Blair paused again. "Why? What are you looking for?"
