As a way to get to know each other, bond, contribute to the comm, and all that lovely jazz, I pose the question; what is the best film you've ever seen screened in class, or never would have heard about if it hasn't been for school?

Personally, there ( Read more... )

hmm well from your introduction I'd say Run Lola Run. A movie I'd never even heard of or anything. My film appreciation teacher was this old hippie type who made experimental films while on drugs and also a big time Buddhist, so he showed us this movie with a distinct Buddhist view. The unconventional set up of the movie was amazingly executed, I loved every minute of the film ( ... )

Both of those movies I saw in class too (The Bicycle Thief just this week actually, but I've seen it before. I'm Italian, it's required viewing apparently :P I like Cinema Paradiso and some of Argento's horror movies but on the whole I'm not a fan either)

The first time I saw it, all through The Bicycle Thief I was convinced that MAYBE it wouldn't end on such a depressing note, just because I felt for the characters so much, but I have to say the entire movie was so much more effective when it did.

And I just generally love Run Lola Run. My teacher hinted at possible Buddhist interpretations of it too, and generally its just so much fun and so unconventional and its impossible to get bored of it, even though 75% of it is just a woman running.

The sad thing is that I have only seen Argento's work with his daughter.... where she would be naked through alot of the film and I was creeped out thouroughly... Anywho, I think the ending of bicycle thief (or bicycle theives) made it so good. You just sit there stunned, that it ended the way it did, but really satisfied. It needed to end that way, it needed to end so honestly, almost poeticly
Yes my teacher said that the buddhist interpretation is apparent when Lola gives up to the universe and asks for help outside herself. Everything falling into place and Lola being allowed to help herself without the use of force on other is very Buddhist. Its just one way of looking at it, though. Lol, all throughout the movie I'm thinking "this girl must be on the german olympic sprinting team", she must have lost ALOT of wieight during filmming from all that running. Oh and also... one of the only German films I've ever seen. Had my teacher not shown me, I don't think I'd have even known they make films in Germany ^^;

I've always wanted to see Man Bites Dog. Never did get around to it.

The only thing we've screened in classes so far (besides our own) has been Nanook of the North. It was very interesting both from a documentary point of view, and an editing point of view. :]

I saw a clip of Man Bites Dog in French class years ago. From what I remember, it was hilarious.

We're currently screening Cidade de Deus(City of God) which has always been on my to-watch list but I just never got around to it. SO GOOD. Definitely the best film so far.

Fort Apache was a film I'd never heard of and ended up loving. John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Shirley Temple (playing Philadelphia Thursday, isn't that the best name ever?) It's just a good western with some great tension between the characters.

Ooooh it would have to be The Murderers Are Among Us... postwar German "rubble" film for my German Cinema (duh!) class. Sooooooo goood! The cinematography is crazy good!
