Madness: A Bipolar Life
by Marya Hornbacher (apologies to the author for an initial typo of her name)

It just came out in March of this year (2008) and I am wondering what people's thoughts are on it. Especially for those of you out there who have read An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness and/or Detour: My Bipolar Road Trip in 4-DLikes/ ( Read more... )

Hi, I saw your question in the Bipolar LJ group and was curious. I am reading An Unquiet Mind at the moment. Actually, I've been reading it for some time now, as I for one reason or another put one book down and pick up another! I'm reading like 10 books now at the same time... crazy ( ... )

Hey, even if you take medication, you can still supplement that with herbal and nutritional supplements, esp. amino acids, digestive enzymes, and Omega 3 fatty acid. Of course it would probably be best discussing it with a nutritionist or a naturopathic doctor who is knowledgeable about contraindications.

I used to be very skeptical about non-drug therapy, but after a horrible experience with coming off the drug effexor, and reading the book by Peter Breggin: Your Drug May Be Your Problem, I really started re-thinking my beliefs about that!

As a general rule, I don't have an issue with plant/supplement-based approach, along with healthy active living.

Having seen some of the potential effects that can result from diving into the world of "naturals" (because, let's face it... everything in our world has natural roots if you go back far enough) without proper monitoring and ongoing supervision, I am not about to start grabbing things off the shelves of my local health food store solely on the basis of their sales associates.

Basic medical here does not cover naturopathic medicine, so at this point it is not a viable option for me... especially because my body has (time and time again) shown that is is prone to side effects on the "you won't get these... not in a million years" list.
