The "This Is Not My Top 10" List

Mar 11, 2009 00:23

I played a few games last year in 2008, moving out and having a roommate and switching off on who picks up what titles allows you both to play quite a few games. So I think I got a taste for a variety of titles to make quite a nice Top 10 list this year, but of all the games I played, some of them didn't make it. Which ones didn't? Well let's see ( Read more... )

I hate to admit it, but I actually somewhat liked Origins. It felt like a step in the bland direction as far as Silent Hill games go, as there wasn't that much original stuff there, but it brought back a lot of nostalgia, and the cutscenes were amazingly beautiful.

Condemned 2 was a huge disappointment for me on so many levels. By being over the top bloody and ultraviolent, it managed to simply gross me out. They also lost the creepy atmosphere, focusing on blatant "THIS IS SCARY" moments, like in the doll factory. I miss the mannequins, the bizarre hallucinations, and the serial killer villain who looked like a more or less normal guy, save for the yellowed eyes.

And then the plot made me sick. An alcohol demon? The sound devices explained right off the bat? The wannabe Combine tower? The junk golems? Wtf.

Condemned 2 started good. That's why I said the second half of the game was totally betrayed by the second half. I was really expecting SKX to look like the creepy normal guy look of the first game, and instead they disfigured him to a level that made him look goofy. I think the best example of something I've seen recently would have to be Rorschach in the Watchmen movie... He's incredibly violent and creepy, and he ends up being a shrimpy guy... yet somehow is still incredibly intimidating. SKX should have stayed the same, I would have forgiven at least some kind of bullet wound on his face, but they took a bullet wound scar and made it something like Two-Face from Dark Knight... way over the top ( ... )

SKX remains one of the creepiest villains ever, in my book. At least in the first game, and it's exactly for the reasons you mentioned- he was normal looking. The hickish jean jacket added an element of creepy to him as well, honestly ( ... )
