well.. we all know ipods had bad publicity over the battery failure and whatnot... but what has just happened to me is just one of those things that is quite rare, but also quite common! read on to feel the pain ... it's funny when you think about it ;D
sunday, i got on the bus and started to play an album, it froze up with no point of return - so i restarted it and it gave me a folder icon with an exclamation mark ... common sense would tell you that it means the DB is corrupt or something similar ... but i thought the ipod just confused itself and restarted it again.. but it got into a loop of - restart, folder icon, restart, folder icon etc... with a clicking noise which sounded like it was mounting the ipods hdd. i managed to get it to sleep and left it in my bag.
when i got home, i synced it with itunes and there was no problem, songs were skipping but i put it down to low memory as i was downloading a lot on that computer, so i didn't think much of it. i created a playlist of around 75~ songs for the following morning and everything was working fine .. no clicking.
on the hike to college, songs were playing fine except it took a while for it to change track when i got bored of the song - this happened once in a blue moon, but not every song - so i thought something was up but couldn't do anything till i got home. when i was walking home, songs were skipping in exactly the same places they were on the ipod library being played via itunes. as well as songs having 1sec snippits of other songs at the end. i managed to get home listening to some music with the odd skip but turned it off, in the old "turn it off for a while and it usually helps" method.
i plonked the ipod in the dock a few hours after and it wouldn't sync to itunes and itunes would freeze if it was open. when i finally did manage to get it up - if i edited something it usually threw the ipod off balance. both these problems were met with the clicking noise and folder icon. let me tell you now, as we've come so far now - hold the chrome part of the ipod to your ear whilst it's playing (minus the headphones in the ipod) and you will hear whirring and maybe the odd click and tinker. this is fine! the clicking i experienced could be heard from a few feet away and was veryVERYVERY annoying, to the point where i snapped at my girlfriend (sorry) .... to put it plain, this clicking was not healthy - what you hear when you put it to your ear when it's playing ... usually is, if not an early warning sign.
i managed to download the latest ipod updater and formatted it (an emotional moment) and started to add the songs again.
ran a diagnostic, but soon realised that the diagnostic mode is crap and doesn't really help much.
after about 600~ songs added to the newly formatted pod .. windows threw the ipod off and said it didnt recognise it OR the firewire port (note: i changed firewire ports midway through to see if it was the problem) ... again, clicking noises and folder icon. by the time i managed to get it back again - i got itunes to find it and added the rest of the songs, but most of the first 600 songs were corrupt and re-added those no problem. i started to edit id3 tags and it was fine ... and then it started again!
so i've turned it off now, in the hopes that it will last the trip to/from school and to dixons!
so i'm off to The Mall tomorow to get a replacement and then add all the songs when i get to jess' house. in short, it has been a very stressful night and hopefully can get a spanker tomorow. HD corruption is probably the most annoying thing ever, and unfortunately it's happened to me .. but never mind! thankgod i kept the receipt and bought a 3 year cover plan on top!
can we all say together "
get perpendicular!" ??!?!!
edit:: got me an ipod photo 60gb .. complete with an iskin (protection see!) for £35. score!
