I'm not sure how well he's known over in the US, but David Mitchell is pretty amazing, especially Ghostwritten. He has a new one out on paperback called Cloud Atlas. Donna Tartt? Used to be a cult classic until her (dissapointing) The Secret Friend was released. James Baldwin, Ian McEwan, DBC Pierre, Susanna Clarke (new novelist, just released Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell)
