Spoilers for Deathly Hallows
[While in Sweden, the then fifteen-year-old Luna and her father saw a cluster of Crumple-Horned Snorkacks sleeping under a snow-covered tree. Barely able to contain her excitement, when she returned to Hogwarts, she told her fellow Ravenclaws about what she saw. Her peers looked at her and when she turned her back, she heard them giggling. Unfazed, Luna walked off, despite their laughter ringing in her ears.]
My imagination just stole me away
(Still...) Still I believe
(I'm missing) I'm missing something real
I need someone who really sees me...
All The Love In The World - The Corrs [Ginny had been her friend since she was three (or at least, that's the earliest she can remember them playing together). Ginny dismissed her claims of Crumple-Horned Snorkacks and Umgubular Slashkilters, but there were times when she let Luna go on, usually when there were nothing else to do. Luna knew that Ginny didn't care much for the creatures, but it was nice to have someone to talk to about them.]
And I could write a song a hundred miles long
Well that’s where I belong and you belong with me
and I could write it down or spread it all around
Get lost and then get found or swallowed in the sea
Swallowed in the Sea - Coldplay [Late at night, when she couldn't sleep, Luna would push back one of the curtains of her four-poster bed in her dorm and look out the window at the moon. She was lucky enough to have a bed closest to the window so she wouldn't need to disturb her roommates. She could spend hours watching the stars and moon, and sometimes she spent so much time staring out her window, looking at the constellations she knew and making up some of her own, that she ended up watching the sun rise. Needless to say, Astronomy was her best subject.]
Well the dogs were whistlin' a new tune
Barkin' at the new moon
Hoping it would come soon
So that they could die
Flames to dust,
Lovers to friends,
Why do all good things come to an end?
All Good Things - Nelly Furtado [Hermione has never believed what Luna said, about the creatures, theories, people, things. Luna knew she was a smart girl, she knew just by looking at her. The only thing they could agree upon initially was that Divination was a waste of time, but Hermione said it was because Divination was a useless subject, while Luna wanted to take another class because staring into crystal balls made her go cross-eyed.
Try as she might, Luna could never convince Hermione to believe even in anything she knew was true. Not even nargles, and everybody believed in nargles.]
My feelings swell and stretch, I see from greater heights
I realize what I am now too smart to mention - to you
You'll say you understand, you'll never understand
I'll say I'll never wake up knowing how or why
I don't know what to believe in, you don't know who I am
You'll say I need appeasing when I start to cry
But never is a promise and I'll never need a lie
Never Is A Promise - Fiona Apple [When Luna was nine, there was a terrible storm. As she lay in her bed, curled around stuffed animals, her blanket pulled up, under her chin, she called out for her Mum. The wind blew at the walls and she could hear the house straining against it. Her mother came in, wearing a pale green nightgown and fuzzy white slippers, her pyjama bottoms sticking out over them. Luna pushed back her blankets and her Mum slipped in and held her until she fell asleep.
The next day, the storm subsided and her father went off to work. By the afternoon, Luna's mother was dead.]
Well now I am grown
And these years have shown
That rain's a part of how life goes
But it's dark and it's late
So I'll hold you and wait
'Til your frightened eyes do close
Lullabye For a Stormy Night - Vienna Teng [Harry was sad, Luna could tell. She was, too, when her mother died so many years ago. And she still was, but she hoped, and she knew, that one day she would see her again. And as she walked away, she could almost feel the weight lifting from Harry's shoulders.]
Breathe into my hands I'll cup them like a glass to drink from
Are you still, still breathin'
Are you still
Breathin'
Glass Vase Cello Case - Tattle Tale ['Are you going to fight him?' Luna asked, her held tilted.
'Fight who?' Harry replied, obviously bewildered.
'You-Know-Who,' Luna answered, matter of factly, 'when he returns.'
'I guess I'll have to.'
Luna smiled. 'I'm sure you'll do spectacularly.'
Harry lowered his gaze and gave a shrug of one shoulder. 'I have no choice.'
'You have a choice,' Luna said, 'it's okay if you're scared, though. I would be. But we'll all be there, for you. Hermione and Ron and Neville and Ginny and me. And everyone else.'
Harry's eyes flittered up to her.
'You're our hero,' she continued, then, without a pause, she added, 'I think Hermione needs a new pair of earrings. I think I'll make her some. Do you think she'll like radishes?']
It's okay, to stay here forever
And it's okay to read in the dark
Put it away, wait 'til tomorrow
Put it away, and take care of your heart
of your heart
Just for a while, I'd seen you smile
It's Okay To Think About Ending - Earlimart [Luna watched the three of them from where she sat at the Ravenclaw table, her breakfast in front of her, her spoon dangling precariously above her bowl of cereal. Hermione was opening the small box that contained the earrings. Ron pulled one of them out, dangling the earring by the hook. He was squinting at it. Harry was smiling, but Hermione looked absolutely horrified.
The spoon slipped between Luna's fingers and milk splashed everywhere, some of it landing on the girl beside her.
'Hey!' she yelped. Luna gazed at the mark.
'It will wash out,' she said, before moving off the bench and heading to the Gryffindor table. She was nearing it when a hand wrapped around her elbow. Looking up, she found Neville. 'Hello, Neville.'
'D'you want to go to Hogsmeade with me on Saturday?'
Luna turned her head to look over to where Hermione was still staring at the earrings. Ron had turned red and Harry was still smiling.
'Okay,' she replied.]
I’m inside your mouth now
Behind your tonsils
Peeking over your molars
You’re talking to her now
And you’ve eaten something minty
And you’re making that face that I like
And you’re going in, in for the kill, kill
For the killer kiss, kiss for the kiss, kiss
Ode to Divorce - Regina Spektor [Luna stared up at her father. Her head hurt, her arms hurt, her stomach hurt and most of all, her heart hurt. Her father was talking, but Luna couldn't hear him, and she knew it wasn't because of wrackspurts. He wanted to save her, he had been saying. But you wanted to hurt my friends, Luna had replied. He looked as though he was going to cry, and then he'd started to talk and Luna didn't hear anything after that.]
Hair is gray and the fire is burrnig
So many dreams on the shelf
You say I wanted you to be proud of me
I always wanted that myself
Winter - Tori Amos [The way was over and Luna sat cross-legged outside her house, ripping up weeds and daisies. She would be returning to Hogwarts the next year. Apparently last year's seventh years would be returning as well, but Luna didn't know whether it was confirmed.
Ginny sat beside her, making a daisy chain that kept falling apart.
'Do you think Hermione will come back? If it's true?'
'Harry said he would be,' Ginny replied. 'Ron doesn't want to. I imagine Hermione will, though. I can't see why she wouldn't.'
'I hope it's true,' Luna replied, picking up a flower and plucking the petals.
'Ron and Hermione are nice.'
'Mmm.'
'Neville's nice, too,' Ginny said pointedly, setting down her garland.
'Yes, he is,' Luna replied truthfully.]
Something in the way she moves
Attracts me like no other lover,
Something in the way she woos me.
I don’t want to leave her now,
You know I believe and how.
Something (Anthology version) - The Beatles [She handed over her present to Harry, and he smiled at her, taking it and setting it on the table beside the rest of the gifts.
'Thank you, Luna.'
'It's a horn from a Crumple-Horned Snorkack. The one that destroyed the house has mended. They apparently duplicate. Dad was very pleased when the debris was removed and he found the second.'
Harry smiled at her, but Luna knew he believed her.
'I meant... thanks. For earlier this year. The... battle.'
'Oh...'
'And afterwards. How you distracted everyone. I meant to ask though- was there really a Blibbering Humdinger?'
Luna smiled and patted the back of his hand. 'Do you think there was?']
And even if I'm there, they'll all imply that I might not last the day
And then you call me and it's not so bad, it's not so bad and
I want to thank you for giving me the best day of my life
Oh just to be with you is having the best day of my life
Thank You - Dido [Luna stared up at her ceiling. The house had since been rebuilt and she had painted her ceiling once more. Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny and Neville smiled down at her. The Quibbler and the Daily Prophet had desperately seeking interviews with them, as well as Luna and anyone else who had participated in the spectacular battle, even after so many months had past. Luna had politely declined. Harry had given one interview and refused any more. Ron had given a few more, but he had retreated to her house for a few days, trying to get away from reporters. Ginny followed a few days later, but only to drag her brother home. She sent Hermione a letter and she had replied in turn. Neville had visited a few days earlier, a bunch of flowers in one hand, asking if she'd like to go getter a Butterbeer with him. Luna had accepted, and his ears had turned pink. Luna thought it made him look charming.
Sighing up at her ceiling, she rolled over and snuggled against her blankets. Everything was quiet outside.]
Maybe I'm a girl and maybe you're the only man
Who could ever help me
Baby won't you help me understand
Maybe I'm amazed at the way you're with me all the time
Maybe I'm afraid of the way I need you
Maybe I'm amazed at the way you help me sing my song

Maybe I'm amazed at the way I really need you
