Thank you for the lovely new pictures today of David Tennant filming for AKA Jessica Jones.
Yeah. I guess I'll keep Tumblr. But it still causes me to occasionally shake my head.
So in AKA Jessica Jones Tennant plays, by all accounts, an extremely noxious villain, Zebediah Killgrave. I did some reading about him and it makes me wonder what the comics Killgrave was in were rated. Vile stuff. He can control minds and he makes women succumb to him, but because he's so sadistic he does things like make one woman watch him rape another.
I am not judging Tennant for agreeing to play this character. However apparently some fans are. Until seeing the show itself, how can you know how close to the comic the character will be portrayed? First of all, his skin is purple in the comics, here he obviously is not, so some things are going to be different. The incident with the main character, where he held her captive for 8 months while subjecting her to his sadism, happened in the past of the show's timeline from what's been revealed so far, so perhaps they will either show those things in flashbacks like they do in Daredevil or refer to their connection via other characters the way shows do to get the viewers up to speed.
The other head scratching aspect is that apparently some fans have said things like they want him to rape them. Oh dear. I haven't read those kinds of comments from anyone even though some of my friends are pretty hardcore in expressing their lust for him, but they are also not 12. I can only surmise that those fans are very young and don't really understand what they're saying when making such a statement.
Those who know where I work will understand when I explain an incident that happened at work to one of my employees. Occasionally we get people who come in and express their disgust at the sex items we carry. In this instance it was a preteen girl, I think my employee said she was maybe 11 or 12. She asked him who owned the store and said they must be a rapist to like having all this sex stuff around. My employee told the girl you don't say that kind of thing about someone no matter what you think of them. Adults would know that, but kids don't fully understand the implication of the word.
As an adult viewer I can separate the actor from the character. From all that I've read about the character, there may be a possibility for this Netflix Marvel series to become part of the Avengers movie universe as Jessica Jones and Killgrave have both had dealings with the Avengers in the comics. There has to be a reason for an actor of Tennant's caliber to be hired for such a perhaps controversial character and the possibility of movies in the future if the show is well received could be one of them, besides him being one of the best actors you could get for such a sadistic part.
Anyway, I'm excited he gets to play something outside his comfort zone. He shines when he "takes it there." Doesn't matter where there is, as long as it's an extreme. The further extreme he takes the character, the better the audience will see the character for what he is, even if that's a character we despise. Isn't that the point of acting? Tennant will have done his job.
