I can't read it yet because I haven't watched the first series and I'm only about a third of the way through the book (yes, there's a novelization that I checked out at the library and downloaded to my iPad so that I didn't even have to go to the building - loads different from the days I remember driving all the way to Rolla to exchange books every couple of weeks). So I don't want to risk any spoilers, as I've only just gotten to the part where the boy's dad is being held for questioning/arrest.
You are brave for trying to avoid spoilers on Broadchurch!
I have the book as well, but didn't read too far in it although I like how it's written. The same writer did a short story to go with each episode of series 2 and those are excellent character studies. You probably realize this, but she is not the writer of the show, that was Chris Chibnall.
You're about where the 2nd episode ends if I remember right. When you get further, tell me who you think "dun it."
At least now I know something I can get you for your birthday. :)
Actually, I gave up some time ago on trying to guess "whodunit" on these sorts of books and movies, because I want to be surprised, LOL. But in this case, I really didn't see that resolution coming. (And I'm looking forward to the second one, even though I do wonder in reading your article above, I kind of agree that I wonder if extending the first series storyline will work as well. It seemed pretty resolved to me, but I could be wrong.)

That's why I'm reading like a madwoman each night. I'm about halfway through now.
We do have Series 1; we just haven't watched it. Ergh.
